In this chapter, Liu Fengze faces a trial in which divine lightning cannot be used to judge the verdict. There is little wind, and the setting sun shines on a deserted field in front of Ksitigarbha Temple. The main character falls into a trap of his own making, becomes besieged by liars and magical monsters, and fails to step beyond the realm of ordinary life.
Here, he is forced to move with the utmost precision; an ill-advised word could spell doom. During the chapter, Fengze finds two women imprisoned in a cell and comes under threat from one of the Eight Unspoken. He uses his intelligence and caution to help Wang Tongtong and Du Yante escape the temple’s traps, the many complex mechanisms inside the temple.
Chapter 4 – Judgment
Throughout these trials, a theme of trust, courage, and how to cleverly overcome danger emerges–little did he know that he would be in a situation where the hero must save living spirits and yet not throw off balance the relations between the two worlds.
- First off, take the Buddhist Card from the upside-down paper figure near the music hall entrance. Next, collect the Five Yansheng Coins beside the phonograph and pick up the strangely shaped Yansheng Coin near the wishing pool.
- Then place the five coins along the pool’s edge and toss them into the water in the order shown by the pendant clues on the music hall door to open the Ksitigarbha Hall.
- Next, use the Buddhist Card inside the hall to view the clue, then flip through the Wordless Prophecy to reveal the new prophecy.
- Go to the offering desk and adjust the electronic offering lights to match the prophecy image, then take the Monk Statue and the Gear.
- Place the Monk Statue on the Kindness Plate of the scale to open the Purgatory Prison gate. After that, embed the strangely shaped coin into the chest, open it, and collect the Keycard and Silver Coin.
- Then give the Silver Coin to Eight Unspoken to receive a Medicinal Bottle, then give the bottle to the jailer to open the puppet theater.
- Next, go to the cell room and read the bamboo scroll on the floor for clues. Then follow the Buddhist Card clues and touch the flower lamps in order to obtain the Wooden Fish Stick.
- Place the Gear into the hidden puzzle box behind the desk and position it correctly to activate the puppet show. Then take the Brush and the Grief Stick from the puppet’s hands.
- Next, return to the prison and write the name into the book on the table with the Brush to obtain the Photo. Then go to the LED Mourning Hall on the stage and clear the obstacles, then throw the Photo inside.
- Adjust the Elegiac Couplet in the LED Mourning Hall using the bamboo scroll clues and collect the Admission Ticket. Then return to the lobby and give the ticket to the upside-down paper figure to open the music hall.
- Next, take the Record and Abacus from the coffin, then tear the joss paper from Black Impermanence’s face. Then give the Wooden Fish Stick to the Ox-Head paper figure as one drumstick and give the Grief Stick as the second drumstick.
- After that, use the Keycard to open the Three-Life Stone contraption and enter the password 平 来 生 正 死 不 based on the hat clue. Then check the Past Life, Present Life, and Future Life screens with the Buddhist Card.
- Return to the lobby and place the Record on the phonograph to start the music and reveal the swaying figure’s clue.
- Then move the electronic screen on the stage and enter the machine password 空 藏 何 and 嚏 娑 诃 using the Three-Life Stone and swaying clues.
- Select the paper figure that resembles White Impermanence and touch it. Then write “Eyes closed, death looms” on its head with the Brush following the LED screen hint.
- Play the guitar on the stage to finish the performance and collect the Lighter. Then return to the prison and give the joss paper to the jailer to receive the Ice-Fire Staff.
- After that, return to the puppet theater and give the Abacus to the merchant puppet, give the Ice-Fire Staff to the constable puppet, and give the Lighter to the scientist puppet to resume the show.
- Use the machine near the bandstand and tick all correct images to receive the Paper Figure Hair. Then return to the lobby and face the enemy, lure the fake Taoist into Ksitigarbha Hall, solve the puzzle to escape the illusion, and pick up the Hat it drops.
- Finally, take the Hat to Eight Unspoken and throw it into the hair bucket, then throw in the Paper Figure Hair to receive the Key, then open the cell door with the key to finish the chapter.
