Guilty Gear -STRIVE- Ver. 2.03 Patch Notes: Every Change Today
Guilty Gear -STRIVE- Ver. 2.03 reworks Counter Blitz and Deflect Shield, adjusts 14 characters, and opens Blazing Pass Duel 3 through December.
GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- rolled out Ver. 2.03 during maintenance on September 24, bumping the battle engine from Ver. 5.02 to Ver. 5.03 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Arc System Works used the patch to rework two of the game's core defensive tools, extend ranked-mode rewards further up the ladder, adjust fourteen characters, and open a new three-month cosmetic pass.
01What Changed in Ver. 2.03
The headline changes are systemic rather than character-specific. Counter Blitz, the game's parry-and-punish defensive option, now activates through the entire recovery window instead of only during the anticipation phase, and its startup drops from 10 frames to 4. Deflect Shield's input is simplified from a directional command to a flat D+P or D+K. On the competitive side, the Ranked Match win streak bonus now applies to Platinum and Diamond, matching the values Iron through Gold already had, and the system waits 60 seconds instead of 25 before allowing a repeat matchup, aimed at players who kept running into the same opponent back to back.
02Counter Blitz and Deflect Shield Get Reworked
Counter Blitz's frame advantage on block improves from -10F to a flat 0F, and its Guard Crush duration and first-hit knockback both increase, making a well-timed activation a genuine punish tool rather than a last-resort escape. Arc System Works also adjusted how invincible multi-hit moves interact with blowback, so a follow-up hit connects more reliably once the first hit of an invincible string lands — a fix aimed at strings that used to whiff their second half after trading with an opponent's attack.
Deflect Shield's simplified D+P/D+K input removes the directional requirement that made it awkward to fire off under pressure, which should make it a more consistent defensive reflex in neutral rather than a move players only landed in the lab.

03Ranked Match and Netcode Changes
Beyond the streak bonus and matchmaking cooldown, Arc System Works says server connection handling was tightened for faster search initialization when entering Ranked Match. None of the netcode rollback itself changed in this patch — the update is scoped to matchmaking pacing and reward parity across ranks, not the underlying connection quality.
04Character Balance: Who Got Buffed and Nerfed
Fourteen characters received tuning in Ver. 2.03. The clearest nerfs land on defensive-option abuse and oppressive pressure strings, while several under-used tools got easier to land or safer to throw out.
| Character | Direction | Key change |
|---|---|---|
| Potemkin | Nerf | →+HS now techs grounded opponents on counter hit; recovery up 29F to 35F |
| Millia Rage | Nerf | Kapel recovery up 9F to 12F, loses low-altitude Jumping HS follow-up |
| Baiken | Buff | Kick Start My Heart startup cut 10F to 7F, faster overall recycle |
| Sol Badguy | Buff | Sidewinder Ignited's Clean Hit window widened in every direction |
| Axl Low | Nerf | Crouching P recovery up 14F to 21F, easier to punish on whiff |
| Testament | Buff | Stain launches higher, connects more reliably from mid-range pokes |
Jam Kuradoberi's Choukyaku Kouryuumon also loses forward movement speed and hitbox range, cutting down its ability to interrupt strings from a distance, while Sin Kiske's Hawk Baker gets taller launches on both hits and a new follow-up hitbox for extended combos. The full breakdown covers May, Zato-1, Leo Whitefang, I-No, A.B.A and Unika as well; the full roster changes are listed on the Steam store page's update history and the official site.

05Blazing Pass Duel 3: Steal the Spotlight
Alongside the balance work, Ver. 2.03 opens Blazing Pass Duel 3: Steal the Spotlight, running September 24 through December 3 in Japan Standard Time, with the reward claim window extended to December 9. The standard track hands out Digital Figure stages, object and effect sets, badges, UI skins and in-game currency, while the Plus track adds a Street-themed outfit for Axl Low and a Bankara-themed outfit for Anji Mito, plus new character colors and additional cosmetics. The Digital Figure gallery also picks up a Robo-Ky set obtainable through the in-game FISHING system, plus camera angle adjustments for Jam Kuradoberi's existing poses, and Archived Episodes gains a new entry, "SHORT STORY 2: Nothing Special Happening Anyway."
06Bug Fixes and What's Next
The patch also cleans up a handful of long-standing issues: visual effects like afterimages and victory cinematics no longer glitch out after Player 2 recovers from Afro state, blocking after a mid-air Wall Break transition is fixed, and Robo-Ky's Electric Gauge now displays correctly in TEAM OF 3 Sparring Mode. On Steam specifically, opening the Wanted Poster during matchmaking in Training Mode no longer resets button settings.
Arc System Works has been explicit that this is meant to be an ongoing process rather than a one-off pass: the studio's patch notes describe watching "the actual battle environment" and adjusting individual characters or mechanics as needed, rather than pushing uniform changes to the whole cast at once. That's consistent with how Ver. 2.00 through 2.02 rolled out earlier this year, and it's worth bookmarking the official Ver. 2.03 patch notes for the full frame-by-frame breakdown ahead of the next round.
