Jagex has confirmed that RuneScape is getting an animated series. The project was announced on October 3 at RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham, with Los Angeles studio Lyrical Animation attached to produce alongside content creator Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White and his own banner, Meatier Productions. It's the first time the 25-year-old MMORPG has been confirmed for a screen adaptation.

TipJagex hasn't released any concept art, casting news, or a premiere window — treat any "leaked" RuneScape show footage circulating online as fan-made until Jagex or Lyrical Animation confirm it through their own channels.

01What Jagex Confirmed at RuneFest

Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy revealed the project live on stage at RuneFest, the studio's annual fan convention, right after the Old School RuneScape keynote. According to the official announcement, development is "at an early stage," and Jagex says further details won't arrive until 2027. No logline, art style, episode count, or distributor has been named yet, and the companies are treating this as a long-term project rather than a product with an imminent release date.

The series will "explore bringing the game's world to the screen," per the announcement, with Lyrical Animation producing the project alongside White's Meatier Productions. Jagex frames the deal as part of a broader push to carry RuneScape's setting, Gielinor, beyond the games themselves.

02Who Is Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White

White is one of the best-known creators in gaming content, with more than 25 million followers across his channels. Jagex's announcement cites roughly 145 million monthly views across his platforms, YouTube uploads that average 1.8 million views each, and nightly livestreams that draw an average of 15,000 concurrent viewers. He's also a longtime RuneScape player, which both companies pointed to as the reason he was brought in rather than an outside screenwriter.

03Lyrical Animation's Growing Slate

The RuneScape deal lands alongside several other projects already in motion at Lyrical Animation and its parent company, Lyrical Media. The studio is producing Godslap, a 2D hand-drawn feature based on White's own comic, aiming for a 2028 release. It's also attached to an anime feature adaptation of Kojima Productions' Death Stranding, and a Bloodborne feature developed with PlayStation Productions and creator Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin, co-financed with Sony Pictures. RuneScape becomes the fourth major video game property on the studio's current docket, continuing a run of creator-led adaptations rather than traditional studio-driven ones.

04Why Now: RuneScape's 25th Anniversary Year

The timing lines up with Jagex's RS25 campaign, a year-long push marking a quarter-century since RuneScape first launched as a browser game in January 2001. The franchise has since grown to include RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and the newer survival spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds, with Jagex citing over 300 million player accounts created across the games and more than $3 billion in lifetime revenue. RuneFest itself doubled in size for the anniversary, hosting roughly 6,000 attendees across two days at the Birmingham NEC.

“For 25 years, our players have helped shape RuneScape's extraordinary world, its characters and its stories. When we talk about the future of RuneScape, we don't just mean games.”Jon Bellamy, CEO, Jagex

Daniel Dominguez, Lyrical Animation's creative director, framed the appeal in similar terms, saying RuneScape "has such a unique storytelling voice, at once laugh-out-loud funny and effortlessly insightful," and calling the chance to adapt it alongside White "a dream come true."

05What's Still Unconfirmed

Beyond the partnership itself, almost everything about the show is unconfirmed. Jagex and Lyrical Animation haven't named a streaming home, broadcast network, animation style, or writers room, and there's no teaser art or casting news attached to the reveal. The "2027" timeline Jagex gave is for more details on the project, not necessarily a premiere — series adaptations of this scope routinely take several years between announcement and release. Treat any footage or screenshots that surface online before an official reveal as unverified.

06How This Fits RuneScape's Broader 2026 Roadmap

The animated series is one piece of a packed RS25 year that's also included a player avatar overhaul, the removal of RuneScape's Treasure Hunter microtransaction system following a community vote, and fresh roadmap reveals for Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds. RuneFest 2026 runs through October 4, and Jagex has said more reveals from the convention's two stages will be shared on its news page and social channels as the event wraps up.

07RuneScape's Past Moves Outside the Game

This isn't Jagex's first attempt to stretch Gielinor beyond the client. The RS25 campaign has already produced a tie-in novel, The Fall of Hallowvale, the first issue of a RuneScape: Untold Tales of the God Wars comic book, and a licensed RuneScape edition of Monopoly. None of those, however, put the world in front of an audience that doesn't already play the game the way a streaming series could. An animated show backed by a creator with White's reach is a different bet: it's aimed at viewers who've never logged into Gielinor rather than players deciding what to grind next.

Whether that bet pays off won't be clear for a while. Jagex has history with ambitious crossover plans that move slowly — RuneScape: Dragonwilds itself spent years in development before its 2025 early access launch — so fans shouldn't expect a trailer before 2027 at the earliest, and probably later than that.
