Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is getting its first post-launch fighter on November 2, and producer Takeshi Yamanaka laid out exactly what's arriving in a PlayStation Blog post published October 7. Phoenix Cyclops, the opening character of the game's Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass, launches that day alongside two new costumes and a kit built around a Dark Phoenix transformation.

The reveal closes out a rollout that started back at San Diego Comic-Con in July, when Arc System Works first confirmed the character and promised more details on how his powers would play in a real match. October 7's gameplay trailer is that follow-through, and the blog post fills in the mechanical specifics the earlier announcement left open.

TipMarvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has a free 3-hour PlayStation Plus Game Trial running alongside this sale — use it to try Phoenix Cyclops' base kit in training mode before deciding whether the $34.99 Year 1 Pass is worth it for your account.

01What's Coming November 2

Phoenix Cyclops drops as a standalone purchase or as part of the Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass, a $34.99 add-on covering four post-launch fighters, a new stage, and a set of result-screen character poses. He's also bundled in for anyone who already owns the Digital Deluxe or Ultimate editions of the base game. His "Classic" and "Legacy" costume options release the same day, giving players a more traditional look to switch to outside of his Phoenix-infused default design.

02Why Phoenix Cyclops, Not Classic Cyclops

Rather than add a standard version of Scott Summers, the team built this Cyclops around his Phoenix Five appearance from the Avengers vs. X-Men comics — the arc where Cyclops and four other X-Men briefly wield a fragment of the Phoenix Force. Yamanaka said the choice was about giving the character room to stand apart from every other Cyclops that's appeared in a Marvel game.

“The Phoenix Force is both an incredible source of power and a path to destruction.”Takeshi Yamanaka, Producer, Arc System Works

In practice, that means Phoenix Cyclops keeps the Optic Blasts and close-quarters combat his base kit is known for, with the Phoenix Force layered on top as an added resource rather than a replacement moveset. Ray Chase, who already voices Cyclops in Marvel Rivals and X-Men '97, returns for the English voice work here too.

03Dark Phoenix: The Solar Shards Mechanic

The headline addition is a resource system called Solar Shards. Landing Optic Blast attacks builds up Shards over the course of a match, and once Cyclops has collected four of them, he can trigger a transformation into Dark Phoenix. The blog post describes it as a significant but temporary power boost that comes with a real cost: Dark Phoenix form drains his own health while it's active, so burning the transformation at the wrong moment can lose a round outright.

That push-pull is a direct nod to the comics, where Cyclops' time wielding the Phoenix Force in Avengers vs. X-Men escalates from power trip to genuine threat. Mechanically, it gives Phoenix Cyclops a timing decision every match: bank Solar Shards for a safer close-range finish, or cash them in early for burst damage while accepting the health trade-off.

04Two Costumes and the Year 1 Pass

Alongside the fighter himself, November 2 adds a "Classic" costume and a "Legacy" costume, both available as part of the same content drop rather than locked behind a separate purchase beyond the pass or standalone character buy. Yamanaka's post frames the costumes as a way to let players run Phoenix Cyclops without the cosmic visual effects if they'd rather see a more grounded take on the character in their matches.

Phoenix Cyclops is the first of four characters promised in the Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass, which also adds one new stage over the course of the season. Arc System Works hasn't named the next three fighters yet, but the pass structure means each additional character should roll out the same way this one did: a reveal well ahead of launch, followed by a dedicated gameplay trailer closer to release.

05A PlayStation Store Sale to Go With It

The announcement lines up with the game's first PlayStation Store discount, which started the same day as the blog post. The sale discounts the Ultimate Edition, and Sony is also running a 3-hour PlayStation Plus Game Trial for players who want to test the base roster before deciding whether to buy in. For anyone who skipped the August 6 launch, Yamanaka's post frames the timing directly: with a new fighter confirmed and a sale live, "now is a great time to jump in."

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is available now on PS5 and PC via Steam, with full crossplay between both platforms. Phoenix Cyclops, his two costumes, and the Dark Phoenix mechanic go live for everyone on November 2.
