Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access: Rewards and Key Dates
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's Campaign Early Access just went live for pre-orders, with 16 missions, unlockable rewards, and DMZ access October 20.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's Campaign is playable right now, a full week before the rest of the game unlocks. Activision flipped the switch on October 16, and anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard or Vault Edition can already play through all sixteen missions.
01Campaign Early Access Is Live
The official Call of Duty blog confirms Campaign Early Access went live on October 16 and stays open "all the way up until the official launch date for Modern Warfare 4 on October 23." The story follows Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad as they fight back against a full-scale invasion across the Korean Peninsula, while Captain John Price, now operating off the grid, hunts down the person pulling the strings behind it.
Early Access covers the Standard Digital Edition and the Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Physical pre-orders don't carry the benefit; Activision's blog is explicit that it only applies to digital pre-orders and pre-purchases.
02Completion Rewards, Mission by Mission
Finishing Campaign missions early doesn't just move the story along — it unlocks a steady drip of cosmetics and boosts that carry straight into Multiplayer and DMZ once the full game launches. According to Activision, the rewards unlock in this order: the "Cho" Base Operator, a "No More Rules" Calling Card, a Double XP Token, the "Dallas" Base Operator, a "Ready Line" Loading Screen, the "Luca" Base Operator, a "Gone Dark" Emblem, the "Oh-Ji" Base Operator, another Double XP Token, the "Kal" Base Operator, a Double Weapon XP Token, the "Dunn" Base Operator, a second Double Weapon XP Token, the "West" Base Operator, one more Double XP Token, and finally the "Park" Base Operator for finishing the Campaign outright.

Because every reward is tied to mission progress rather than real-world time, there's no benefit to rushing ahead of a confirmed walkthrough — missing a cutscene detail to bank a Calling Card a day earlier isn't a good trade. Play it at a normal pace and the full set unlocks naturally before October 23.
03DMZ Early Access and the Full Launch
Campaign is only the first wave of Early Access. The same pre-order benefit opens DMZ, Modern Warfare 4's returning extraction shooter mode, starting October 20 — three days ahead of the simultaneous worldwide launch on October 23. DMZ drops squads into an open-world Exclusion Zone to loot, complete faction missions and fight both AI and rival Operators, with the goal of extracting before time runs out; die or miss the window and your loadout for that run is gone. Multiplayer stays locked until the October 23 release date alongside DMZ's broader unlock, so only the Campaign is playable during the current window.

Activision is explicitly framing the staggered rollout as squad prep: play the Campaign solo now, regroup for DMZ on the 20th, and have Operators, loadouts and Activision ID friend lists already sorted by day one. If your squad is split across platforms, cross-platform friend adds through Activision ID are worth sorting out well before the 20th rather than scrambling that morning.
04Editions, Platforms and What's Missing
Early Access applies only to the Standard Digital and Vault Editions purchased digitally; it doesn't extend to retail boxed copies or to Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders, which Activision says open later this year on a separate schedule. Modern Warfare 4 is rated M for Mature by the ESRB, citing blood and gore, intense violence, strong language and drug references, in line with every mainline entry since the 2019 reboot. One notable absence at launch: unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare 4 is not launching into Xbox Game Pass, so Game Pass subscribers will need to buy in separately to get Early Access or day-one access.
05Catch Up Before You Play
If it's been a while since Modern Warfare (2019) or Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty's own recap video is the fastest way back in — it walks through the invasion of Urzikstan, the formation of Task Force 141, and the fallout between Price and General Shepherd that sets up Modern Warfare 4's opening missions.
The full game, including Multiplayer, launches worldwide on October 23 across Steam, Battle.net, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Warzone integration isn't part of day one and will follow at some point after launch, so anyone expecting the battle royale tie-in on the 23rd should plan around Campaign and DMZ instead.
