World of Warcraft Hotfixes Sept 17: PvP Rating Inflation Boosted

Blizzard pushed a new round of World of Warcraft hotfixes on September 17, and the headline change lands in PvP: rated ladder inflation just got a significant boost. The rest of the list keeps sanding down rough edges in Patch 12.1, "Curse of Ula'tek," including the Venomous Abyss raid and the Ruby Life Pools dungeon.

01Where This Sits in Midnight Season 2

Patch 12.1 launched August 11 as a mid-expansion content drop for World of Warcraft: Midnight, and its competitive endgame, the Venomous Abyss raid and a fresh Mythic+ dungeon rotation, went live a week later on August 18 alongside the season's new rated PvP ladder. Since then, Blizzard has shipped hotfixes on a near-weekly cadence rather than waiting for a full content patch, a pattern the studio has leaned on across recent expansions to react to raid and arena data almost as fast as guilds and ladder climbers generate it. September 17's batch is the latest entry in that run, and it's a smaller one than the September 15 pass that preceded it, but the PvP rating change affects far more players than either of the two bug fixes tied to it.

02What Changed on September 17

Two fixes hit current endgame content. In Ruby Life Pools, Blazebound Destroyers and Primalist Flamedancers could fail to count toward the enemy forces total if no player was on their threat table when they died, stalling groups that relied on off-tank pulls or pet damage to finish them off. In the Venomous Abyss raid, the Coiled Altar encounter's Unnerving Fixation ability was targeting tank characters far more often than the fight intended, forcing tanks to eat effects meant to be spread across the raid.

The bigger swing is on the PvP side. Blizzard significantly increased rating inflation across every rated mode, with extra emphasis on Battleground Blitz, Rated Battlegrounds and Rated 3v3 Arena. The change is a direct response to player feedback that ratings weren't climbing the way earlier seasons had trained players to expect, and it's meant to keep the ladder moving in a healthy direction as Midnight Season 2 continues. Alongside it, the Font of Venomous Rage trinket had its PvP damage cut by 50%, closing a gap where a PvE-tuned item was overperforming in arenas and battlegrounds.

03Venomous Abyss Keeps Getting Tuned Down

The Venomous Abyss has been the target of nearly every hotfix batch since Midnight Season 2 opened its eight-boss roster on August 18, and the September 15 wave was no exception. Sszorak had Tempest damage cut 20% on Heroic and Mythic, and Caustic Claws no longer leaves a pool of Caustic Residue on Heroic. Twin Fangs saw Corrosive Spit damage reduced 20% on Mythic, fewer Broodlings of Ithraz spawning from Rouse the Brood, and a slower Visceral Burst cast.

The Coiled Altar, the same fight fixed for tank targeting on the 17th, also picked up damage reductions to Venom Rupture and Mutagenic Venom, slower Wail of Terror casts, and more predictable Spiteful Soulcoiler spawn behavior. Ula'tek, the raid's finale, got a long list of Raid Finder and Mythic adjustments, from a five-times-longer Doomscale Warden cast to fewer Blightscale Spawn adds during both intermission stages on Mythic. None of these are new mechanics, just difficulty knobs Blizzard has been turning down as raiders spend more time in the encounter, so expect the tuning pass to continue in future weeks rather than stop here.

04Smaller Fixes Worth Knowing About

A few quality-of-life items are riding along. Players behind on Spark of Tides, meaning they're holding more Spark Dust than actual Sparks, will have the missing Sparks deposited into their bags on login instead of needing to farm the shortfall manually. Delves are once again counting toward the "Hope in the Darkest Corners" quest objective after a bug stopped that progress from registering. In the Coiled Isle zone, Curse Surges now rotate every 30 minutes instead of 45, which speeds up access to the zone's rotating world content for players logging in for a short session.

05What This Means for Patch 12.1

None of this requires a client download; hotfixes like these apply live, with some needing a realm restart to fully take effect. The pattern is consistent with how Blizzard has run the last several content patches: ship a raid tier and a PvP season, then spend the following weeks trimming outliers on both sides based on real play data instead of PTR testing alone. If the cadence holds, raiders should expect another Venomous Abyss adjustment pass before Midnight Season 2 wraps, and arena and battleground players should start seeing ratings move again as the inflation change works through the ladder.
