NBA 2K27 Badge Tier List: Best Badges After the Gameplay Update

NBA 2K27's September gameplay update buffed Rise Up and reworked contests and steals — here is our tier list ranking every badge on the new patch.

NBA 2K27's badge system got its biggest shake-up of the season on September 17, when a server-side gameplay update rewrote how shot contests, standing dunks and steals interact with your MyPLAYER build. None of it touched the badge list itself — the same 53 badges across Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding and Physicals are still there — but the update changed which of those badges actually move the needle on a stick.

This tier list ranks the badges worth building around right now, reasoned from what 2K has actually published in its official patch notes: the exact shooting, dunking, steal and speed changes from the September 17 update, plus the Shot Artist and Calibrated Takeover nerfs from the August 31 patch. Everything beyond the confirmed changes is our read of how they shift value across the badge list, and we're labeling that as opinion, not fact.

TipDon't bench your steal-rating investment because spam-stealing got patched out — the September 17 fix rewards legitimate Steal attribute on contact, so Interceptor and Glove are worth more now, not less.

01What Changed in the September 17 Gameplay Update

2K's official patch notes for the update, posted on the NBA 2K27 patch updates page, break the change into four pieces. On shooting, the update "strengthened defensive contests," with well-contested and low-percentage attempts now less effective, while wide-open looks got "a slight boost to reward smart shots." On dunking, standing dunks "now succeed more often, most noticeably against average and below-average interior defenders," and the Rise Up badge "now provides a more meaningful benefit at Gold tier and above." On steals, 2K fixed an issue where "lower-rated defenders (and players with depleted adrenaline) could get on-ball steals more consistently than elite defenders," so steal rating is "now properly rewarded on contact with the ball." Overall game speed was "increased and/or standardized to be consistent across all modes of play."

None of that is a badge buff or nerf in the literal sense — 2K didn't touch tooltips or percentages outside of Rise Up — but it changes the math behind several badges by changing what they're compensating for. A badge that used to cover for a cheap steal-spam build is worth less once steal-spam stops working. A badge that protects a jump shot against a well-timed contest is worth more once contests hit harder.

02How the Badge System Works This Year

NBA 2K27 ships with 53 MyPLAYER Badges, 19 of them new, split across six categories: Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding and Physicals, according to 2K's own breakdown of the badge system. You earn Badge Tokens through gameplay and spend them to fill Badge Loadouts, with Synergy slots that reward stacking badges that complement each other rather than maxing out one category alone. That structure matters here: a badge's raw power means less than how cheaply it slots into a build that's also trying to cover shooting, finishing and defense out of the same limited pool.

We're ranking badges on three things: how directly the September 17 update touches what the badge does, how much of your limited Badge Token pool it's worth committing to, and whether it synergizes with the shot-contest and steal-rating changes specifically. A badge that was already strong before the patch and got stronger ranks above one that simply didn't get worse.

03S Tier: Rise Up, Deadeye and Interceptor

Rise Up (Finishing) is the only badge 2K explicitly named in the patch notes, and the buff is real: it "provides a more meaningful benefit at Gold tier and above," which combined with standing dunks succeeding more often against average and below-average interior defenders makes Rise Up the single clearest upgrade in the whole badge list this patch. If you're playing any build that attacks the rim off two feet, Gold Rise Up or higher is no longer optional.

Deadeye (Shooting), which reduces the shooting penalty from a closing defender, becomes more valuable the moment contests hit harder across the board. 2K's notes specifically call out well-contested and low-percentage attempts as the shots that got weaker; Deadeye is the one badge in the Shooting category built to keep a shot out of that bucket. It was a solid Gold pickup before September 17. It's closer to a requirement now for anyone shooting off anything but a wide-open look.

Interceptor (Defense) is our biggest opinion call in the S tier, and we're flagging it as such: 2K's fix to on-ball steals rewards steal rating on contact with the ball instead of letting lower-rated defenders get away with spam-stealing. Interceptor's high Steal requirement was already a real investment; that investment now pays off the way it was designed to, instead of competing with cheaper steal-spam tactics the patch was built to shut down. We'd rank this below Rise Up and Deadeye in certainty — 2K didn't name Interceptor directly — but above everything else based on how the steal-rating fix lines up with what the badge actually requires.

04A Tier: Glove, Set and Fire and Post Powerhouse

Glove (Defense) sits right behind Interceptor for the same reason: it's a Steal-rating badge that benefits from the same on-contact fix, just at a slightly lower attribute threshold that makes it more attainable for wing and guard builds that aren't fully committed to defense.

Set and Fire and Quick Trigger (Shooting) cover catch-and-shoot releases, and with wide-open looks getting a slight boost to reward smart shots, badges that help you get a clean catch-and-shoot off quickly are rewarded twice over: once by the badge, once by the patch's own shooting math. If your build lives off movement and relocation rather than pull-ups, either of these is worth prioritizing over a pure shot-creation badge right now.

Post Powerhouse (Finishing) rounds out this tier for the same underlying reason as Rise Up: standing-dunk and post-finish success against average and below-average interior defenders went up across the board, and Post Powerhouse is the badge built specifically around winning that matchup with strength rather than verticality.

05B Tier: Limitless Range, Strong Handle and Boxout Boss

Everything in this tier is unaffected by the September 17 notes either way, which keeps it solidly playable without becoming this patch's priority pickup. Limitless Range and Static Middy (Shooting) still cover deep range and mid-range pull-ups respectively, and nothing in the patch changes pull-up shot math specifically — the contest change applies to any jump shot, but these badges don't interact with it any more than Set and Fire does.

Strong Handle and Pace (Playmaking) get a marginal, unconfirmed bump from the overall game-speed increase simply because faster gameplay rewards ball-handlers who can control tempo, but 2K's notes don't single out ball-handling at all, so treat that as our inference rather than a confirmed interaction.

Boxout Boss and Crasher (Rebounding) are stable, useful picks for any big who neither gained nor lost ground this patch — rebounding wasn't mentioned anywhere in the September 17 notes.

06C Tier: Off-Ball Pest and the Situational Picks

Off-Ball Pest (Defense) and Sync Snatcher (Rebounding) are narrow, build-specific badges that only pay off if your whole defensive scheme is built around them, and neither interacts with anything the September patch touched. They're not bad badges — they're just a worse use of a limited Badge Token pool than anything ranked above them this patch, especially once you're also trying to fit a Rise Up or Deadeye upgrade into the same build.

One more note that belongs here rather than in the badge tiers above: 2K's August 31 update reduced the Shot Artist and Calibrated Takeover abilities. Takeover is a separate system from badges — it's tied to in-game momentum rather than a Badge Loadout slot — but if you were leaning on either of those two Takeover types to cover for a thin badge setup, that crutch is weaker than it was a month ago, which is one more reason to lean into the S- and A-tier badges above instead.

07Building a Badge Loadout for the New Meta

If you're adjusting an existing build rather than starting fresh, here's the order we'd work through it in.

Quick Badge Loadout Adjustments for the New Patch

  1. 1Check how many of your attempts are well-contested pull-ups versus catch-and-shoot looks; the September patch made the first category noticeably worse and the second slightly better, so shot selection matters as much as your badge loadout.5 min
  2. 2If your build drives or posts for standing dunks, move Rise Up to Gold or higher before spending tokens elsewhere — it's the one confirmed badge buff in the update.3 min
  3. 3If your defense relied on mashing steal attempts regardless of rating, that approach is directly weaker after the on-ball steal fix; rebuild around your actual Steal attribute and badges like Interceptor or Glove instead.5 min
  4. 4Set and Fire or Quick Trigger pay off more than Limitless Range right now if most of your offense comes off movement rather than isolation, since wide-open catch-and-shoot looks got a direct boost.5 min
  5. 5Shot Artist and Calibrated Takeover were both reduced on August 31, so treat Takeover as a bonus on top of a solid Badge Loadout, not a substitute for one.2 min

08Where This Tier List Could Move

2K has shipped a title update roughly every one to two weeks since launch, and the September 17 change arrived as a server-side gameplay update rather than a downloadable patch, which is usually how 2K handles mid-cycle tuning rather than a one-off fix. If Rise Up's Gold-tier benefit turns out to be overtuned in ranked Rec or Pro-Am play, expect a follow-up adjustment before the next MyTEAM season turns over. Badges that didn't move this patch — the entire Rebounding and Physicals categories, in particular — are the ones most likely to see a direct buff if 2K decides finishing and shooting have pulled too far ahead.

FAQ

What exactly changed in NBA 2K27's September 17 gameplay update?

2K strengthened defensive shot contests (well-contested and low-percentage shots got weaker, wide-open looks got a slight boost), made standing dunks succeed more often against average and below-average interior defenders, buffed the Rise Up badge at Gold tier and above, fixed on-ball steals so steal rating is properly rewarded on contact, and standardized overall game speed across modes.

Is the Rise Up badge buff confirmed, or is that a rumor?

It's confirmed directly in 2K's own patch notes on the NBA 2K27 patch updates page, which state Rise Up 'now provides a more meaningful benefit at Gold tier and above.'

Does this tier list include Takeover abilities like Shot Artist?

No. Takeover is a separate momentum-based system from Badge Loadouts. Shot Artist and Calibrated Takeover were both reduced in 2K's August 31 update, which is why we call them out separately rather than ranking them alongside badges.

How many badges does NBA 2K27 have in total?

53 MyPLAYER Badges, 19 of them new this year, split across six categories: Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding and Physicals, per 2K's official badge system breakdown.

Will this badge tier list change again?

Likely. 2K has shipped a title update roughly every one to two weeks since launch, and badges or categories left untouched by the September 17 update, like Rebounding and Physicals, are the most probable targets for the next balance pass.
