Overwatch Season 5: Best PC Settings and New Hero Keybinds
Overwatch Season 5 moved Sombra's and Roadhog's reworked abilities onto new default keybinds and rebalanced Doctrine. Here's every PC setting worth rechecking.
Overwatch's Season 5: A Grim Doctrine went live on October 6, and it didn't just add a new hero. Blizzard moved Sombra into the Support role, gutted and rebuilt Roadhog's kit, and folded both reworks onto the same keybind slots their old abilities used to occupy. If you play either hero regularly, your muscle memory is about to lie to you. Here's exactly what changed under the hood, which settings actually need your attention, and which ones Blizzard already handled for you. Every bind mentioned below lives under Options > Controls, either on the general tab or the per-hero tab named after Sombra, Roadhog or Doctrine specifically.
01Doctrine's Infuse Combo and Default Keybinds
Doctrine, Overwatch's 54th hero, launched as a Support built around a single passive called Infuse System. His kit is four pieces that all revolve around it:
- Primary Fire – Eternal Scepter: a mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies; infused, it fires a larger piercing blast.
- Ability 1 – Infuse: loads a powerful effect onto whichever ability you use next.
- Ability 2 – Invigorating Drones: deploys drones to an ally for attack speed and healing; infused, it also deploys to Doctrine himself.
- Ability 3 – Shrouded Momentum: a horizontal rush with damage reduction; infused, it grants brief free-flight.
- Ultimate – Deliverance: a drone swarm that cuts enemy max health and grants allies overhealth.
Because Infuse only matters if you press it a half-second before the ability it's boosting, give it a key you can reach without moving your hand off WASD — the same way you'd treat a cooldown-reset ability on any other kit. Blizzard already tuned him once since his September Hero Trial: Invigorating Drones' attack speed bonus dropped from 35% to 30%, Shrouded Momentum's cooldown rose from 7 to 8 seconds and its damage reduction fell from 50% to 40% (and no longer grants crit immunity), and his ultimate now costs 8% more. None of that changes your keybinds, but it does change the timing windows you're practicing against, so don't assume the Hero Trial numbers still apply. His ultimate, Deliverance, also fires its drones faster now (fire rate up from 4 to 5) but the overhealth-and-debuff window is shorter (8 seconds down to 6, with the decay itself finishing in 4 instead of 5), so it rewards a cleaner team fight entry rather than a slow setup.
02Sombra's Abilities Moved, But Her Keybinds Didn't
Sombra's rework is the biggest control-scheme trap in the patch. She's now a Support in the Tactician subrole, and two of her signature abilities are gone entirely:
- Hack is removed. Her Secondary Fire slot is now Hotfix: heal an ally over time (65 instant health plus 25 per second, capped at 175 total healing or 12 seconds), or hack a health pack or enemy deployable with no charge cost on a separate 6-second cooldown. It can be used while stealthed, briefly revealing her.
- Virus is removed. Her Ability 1 slot is now Cyberspace: a projectile that explodes into a zone dealing 25 damage per second to enemies and 30 healing per second to allies, inflicting a new Weaken status that halves the target's own damage and healing output for its duration.
- Opportunist is removed as her passive, replaced by Conspirator, which reveals fully charged enemy ultimates to you.
Here's the part that actually matters for your settings: Blizzard assigned Hotfix to Secondary Fire and Cyberspace to Ability 1 by default — the exact slots Hack and Virus used to occupy. If you never touched Sombra's keybinds, you don't need to rebind anything. Where this breaks is the in-game keybind search box. If you'd previously searched "Hack" to double-check your binding, that search now returns nothing, because the ability itself no longer exists under that name. Search "Hotfix" and "Cyberspace" instead.
It's also worth re-learning her ranges before you queue Competitive. Translocator's stealth window grew from 5 to 6.5 seconds, but it now takes 0.75 seconds to enter stealth instead of 0.3, and its throw range shrank from 18 meters to 12.25. The Machine Pistol's spread also tightens more gradually — it now takes 10 shots to reach max spread instead of 6 — which rewards tapping fire rather than holding it down, a sensitivity and recoil-control habit worth practicing in the range before a ranked match.
03Roadhog Lost His Secondary Fire — Here's What's There Now
Roadhog's rework targets the frustration around one-shot Chain Hook combos while giving him a genuine utility tool. His old Scrap Gun secondary fire is gone, and Trash Compactor now sits on that same Secondary Fire slot by default: hold it to absorb incoming projectiles for 2 seconds, then release an explosive shot that scales from 75 to 200 damage based on what you caught. It costs 15% of his movement speed while active and has a 10-second cooldown in 5v5 (11 seconds in 6v6).
His primary fire changed shape too — it now fires two bursts per volley instead of one shot, with a center projectile added alongside the usual pellet spread, so the effective range and falloff curve are both different from what you're used to aiming around (falloff now starts at 20 meters and ends at 35, down from 30–50). Chain Hook's stun duration dropped slightly (0.4 to 0.3 seconds) but now leaves targets 4.5 meters away instead of 3, which changes your follow-up timing on the hook-and-hit combo. None of this requires a settings change, but if you've got Roadhog bindings written down anywhere outside the game, update the notes: Secondary Fire's job changed completely.
04Graphics and Performance Settings for Watchpoint: Grímsvötn
Season 5 also adds Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a new Escort map set in an Icelandic prison tied to Doctrine's backstory. New maps are usually where frame-time spikes show up first, since the geometry and lighting haven't been profiled by players yet. If you notice stutter specifically on Grímsvötn and nowhere else, drop Reflections and Ambient Occlusion by one tier before touching your global settings — both are more expensive on maps with a lot of reflective ice and interior lighting, and Grímsvötn has plenty of both. If you're on an Nvidia or AMD card with upscaling enabled, this is also a reasonable time to confirm your DLSS/FSR preset hasn't silently reset to Quality after the patch install, which happens occasionally after major Overwatch updates.

05Settings the Patch Doesn't Change For You
A few things worth checking manually rather than assuming the patch carried them over:
- Per-hero crosshairs. If you run custom crosshair codes or colors on Sombra and Roadhog specifically (rather than a global crosshair), those settings are untouched by the rework, but your aim habits around their new ranges aren't — spend five minutes in the Practice Range before your first real match.
- Custom Restricted Words. Blizzard added a new option under Social > Text Chat this patch: a list of specific words or phrases you can add so messages containing them get hidden with a "Possible Bad Message (Custom)" warning, separate from the automatic profanity filter. It's off by default and has to be turned on manually. If you've got Streamer Mode enabled, you'll need to confirm before you can view or edit that list.
- Battle Pass tracking. Unrelated to combat settings, but worth knowing: Unvaulted Battle Passes from past seasons can now be progressed alongside your current one from Home > Battle Passes > Legacy Pass. It doesn't touch your keybinds, but it's new menu real estate you'll see the first time you log in post-patch.

06Quick Checklist Before You Queue
Run through this once after installing the patch, especially if you maintain written notes on your binds outside the game.
Post-Patch Settings Checklist
- 1Secondary Fire is now Hotfix (heal/hack) and Ability 1 is now Cyberspace (zone weaken). Both sit on her old Hack and Virus slots, so your existing binds still work — update your own notes, not the keybind menu.2 min
- 2His old spread shot is gone. Secondary Fire now fires Trash Compactor, which absorbs projectiles for 2 seconds before releasing an explosive counter-shot.2 min
- 3Infuse (Ability 1) only pre-loads an effect onto his next ability, so it needs a key you can hit without leaving WASD, the same way you'd treat a quick-cast cooldown on another kit.2 min
- 4Sombra's Translocator throw range dropped to 12.25 meters and Roadhog's Chain Hook now leaves targets 4.5 meters away. Spend a few minutes in the Practice Range before a ranked match.5 min
- 5It's a new, off-by-default option under Social > Text Chat that hides messages containing words or phrases you choose yourself.1 min
- 6New maps are where DLSS/FSR presets and Reflections settings are most likely to need a second look if you see stutter that isn't present elsewhere.3 min
07Should You Expect Another Pass Soon?
Blizzard's own patch notes describe Doctrine as "generally well received" during his trial weekend but "overperforming relative to other supports," which is exactly why his numbers already moved once between the trial and today's launch. Treat the values in this guide as the current baseline, not a fixed target — unconfirmed, but a hero that got nerfed once before his official release is a reasonable candidate for a follow-up balance pass once Season 5's first competitive week of data comes in.
FAQ
Do I need to manually rebind Sombra's new abilities?
No. Hotfix took over her old Secondary Fire slot and Cyberspace took over Ability 1, so any existing keybinds on those slots still work. You only need to update your own mental map, plus any macro or search that referenced "Hack" or "Virus" by name — those terms no longer match anything in the keybind search.
What replaced Roadhog's secondary fire?
Trash Compactor, a new ability that absorbs incoming projectiles for 2 seconds and fires them back as a scaling explosive shot. It's bound to Secondary Fire by default, the same slot his old spread shot used to occupy.
Does Doctrine's Infuse need its own keybind?
Yes. Infuse is Ability 1 and only pre-loads an effect onto whichever ability you use next — Invigorating Drones, Shrouded Momentum, or his primary fire — so it's worth a key you can hit cleanly before the ability it's empowering.
Are these Season 5 numbers final, or will they change again?
Treat them as the current baseline rather than a fixed target. Blizzard's own patch notes say Doctrine was already adjusted once between his September Hero Trial and the October 6 launch for overperforming relative to other supports, so further tuning after Season 5's first competitive week is unconfirmed but plausible.
What is Custom Restricted Words?
A new option added this patch under Social > Text Chat that lets you hide chat messages containing specific words or phrases you choose yourself, separate from Blizzard's automatic profanity filter. It's off by default.
