EA and Respawn used an official gameplay trailer, not a patch-notes post, to introduce Apex Legends: Cipher. The video dropped on October 29, 2026, four days ahead of Season 31's November 3 launch, and it's built around a single idea: in Cipher, the deadliest weapon on the map isn't a gun, it's information. Here's exactly what the trailer shows, matched against Respawn's own patch notes and designer commentary, so you know what's confirmed before you land in King's Canyon.

01What the Cipher Gameplay Trailer Actually Shows

The trailer opens on a squad reading a fight from a distance before committing, then cuts between three systems in quick succession: a drone being thrown and recalled mid-fight, two revolvers firing in one motion, and a locked crate getting cracked open under fire. That sequencing isn't accidental. Respawn's own media alert frames Cipher around "all-new ways for players to gather essential intel for their squads to outhink and outgun opponents," and every beat in the footage maps to one of four confirmed changes: a reworked Crypto, the new Akimbo Wingman, Strongholds, and a Ranked update to Legend Bans. Revenant and Lifeline also get buffs this season, though the trailer spends most of its runtime on the four systems above.

02Crypto Rewired: From Drone-Camper to Aggressive Scout

The clearest shift in the trailer is Crypto's. For most of Apex Legends' history he's been a backline camper, parked on a ridge flying his drone. Cipher changes that on purpose: per a firmware upgrade from his sister Mila, his kit now rewards pushing fights instead of watching them from range.

His Surveillance Drone no longer runs on a cooldown — it runs on a 25-second battery that you can throw, recall, and redeploy far faster than before, and it now scans a full 360 degrees instead of a forward cone. Respawn also removed its ability to scan doors and loot bins, so it's purely a combat tool now, and enemies can spot it more easily in the air. When the drone tags a target, that mark shows through geometry for 8 seconds (12 seconds with the matching upgrade) and persists even if the drone gets destroyed or recalled mid-fight. A new Sentry Mode tags anyone the drone sees on sight, and the EMP ultimate — previously a channeled cast — now fires with a single button press, dealing 50 shield damage and a slight slow if Crypto doesn't have line of sight on a target, or full shield damage and a much stronger slow if he does. His old Ally.MoveTo upgrade is now just part of his base passive, and a new Charged Up upgrade replaces Hackathon, adding 10 seconds of drone battery instead.

03Akimbo Wingman: Double the Gun, Same Skill Ceiling

The trailer's clearest new-weapon shot is a Legend holding two Wingman revolvers, one in each hand — the first new akimbo weapon since Respawn introduced the dual-wield system back in Season 22, and the first akimbo weapon built around a burst. Pulling the trigger fires both Wingmans in sequence rather than simultaneously, which keeps the gun's skill-based, mid-range poke identity intact while lowering the barrier to actually landing that poke under pressure.

Adding Akimbo Wingman to the loot pool isn't free. Respawn vaulted the Elite Hemlok to make room, and brought the Hemlok Burst AR back into rotation as a result. If you've built your drop path around Elite Hemlok crafting stations, expect a different early loadout once Cipher goes live.

04Strongholds Add a Second, Louder Loot Drop

Strongholds are new to Cipher, and the trailer's shot of a squad cracking open a glowing crate while enemies close in is the clearest look at how they work. They don't replace Care Packages — Respawn's designer notes are specific that one Stronghold spawns per match in addition to existing Care Packages, not instead of them. A Stronghold lands the way a Care Package does, but it's locked on arrival: a squad has to capture and hold the surrounding ground before it opens, and any other team nearby can contest that capture to steal the loot for themselves.

That risk comes with a real reward. Opening a Stronghold can hand out Care Package-tier weaponry, Gold Guns, crate weapons, corrupted attachments, and EVO shield upgrades for the whole squad — but the process takes time, and finishing it triggers an alarm that broadcasts your exact location to every other team within range. Respawn seeded Strongholds with dynamic cover and Hardlight barriers specifically so the holding squad has a fighting chance once that alarm goes off, and each one's exact position depends on local terrain and where the ring sits at the time it drops, so you won't find them in the same spot twice.

05Ranked Legend Bans Hit Diamond and Above

The trailer's final confirmed system doesn't touch core gameplay at all — it touches queueing. Starting with Cipher, Ranked lobbies at Diamond tier and above get a Legend Bans vote before the match begins. Every player in the lobby casts one vote to ban a single Legend, and the Legend with the most votes has the highest chance of being banned for that match. It's a direct response to one-Legend metas dominating high-rank Ranked play, and it only applies once you've climbed past Platinum, so Bronze-through-Platinum queues are unaffected.

TipAkimbo Wingman vaults the Elite Hemlok out of the loot pool. If your go-to drop path farms Elite Hemlok crafting materials, scout a different early-game weapon once Cipher goes live.

06Should You Watch the Full Trailer Yourself

If you only take one thing from Cipher's gameplay trailer, it's that Respawn built this season around rewarding squads that go looking for a fight instead of avoiding one — a reworked Crypto who scouts aggressively, a weapon that lowers the skill floor on an aggressive push, and a loot structure that pays you for holding ground under pressure. Watching the trailer itself is still worth five minutes before you queue: Respawn's cuts between Crypto's drone, the Akimbo Wingman reveal, and the Stronghold raid are paced to show exactly how those three systems are meant to work together in a single fight, which reads clearer on screen than in any patch-notes bullet list. Apex Legends: Cipher launched November 3 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via the EA App, Epic Games Store, and Steam.

FAQ

When did EA and Respawn release the Apex Legends Cipher gameplay trailer?

They published it on October 29, 2026, four days before Cipher's November 3 launch, according to the official EA and Respawn media alert.

What does Crypto's Cipher rework change?

His Surveillance Drone switches from a cooldown to a 25-second battery you can recall and redeploy faster, scans a full 360 degrees instead of doors and loot bins, and marks enemies through geometry for 8 seconds. A new Sentry Mode tags enemies on sight, and his EMP ultimate now fires with a single button press.

What is the Akimbo Wingman?

It's a dual-wielded version of the Wingman revolver — the first akimbo "burst" weapon in Apex Legends, firing both guns in sequence on a single trigger pull for roughly double the firepower of one Wingman.

Do Strongholds replace Care Packages?

No. Strongholds are a separate, additional loot drop — one per match alongside existing Care Packages — that lands locked and forces squads to capture and hold the area before it opens.

Who is affected by the new Ranked Legend Bans?

Only Diamond-tier lobbies and above. Each player casts one vote to ban a Legend before the match, and the Legend with the most votes has the highest chance of being banned.
