Overwatch November 3 Update: Taking Reign and Hero Changes
Overwatch's November 3 patch nerfs Doctrine and Ana, buffs Junker Queen and Reaper, and kicks off the Taking Reign event through December 7.
Overwatch's November 3 update is live, and it covers a lot of ground: a full hero balance pass across every role, the start of the Taking Reign event that closes out the year-long Reign of Talon story, and the return of the Excavation Initiative loot box event. Here's everything that changed and what it means for the next five weeks.
01Overwatch's November 3 Patch Goes Live
Blizzard published the November 3, 2026 patch notes as a mid-season update for Season 5, A Grim Doctrine. Unlike a quiet maintenance pass, this one touches nearly every role in the game: five tank heroes, eight damage heroes, and six support heroes all received changes, on top of a separate set of Stadium-mode-only adjustments for Winston, Cassidy, Genji, Sojourn, and Vendetta.
Alongside the balance changes, the notes list bug fixes for Sierra's Made My Night skin audio, Juno's Pureflow and Fearless skins, D.Va's Propulsors launching her too fast in the air, Mizuki getting stuck in the payload on Circuit Royale, and a Wrecking Ball Grappling Claw exploit that let players retract into extra rolling speed. An Eichenwalde sightline was also removed, and Stadium's unintended Ranked grouping restrictions were turned back off.
02Hero Balance Changes: Who Got Buffed and Nerfed
The clearest theme in this patch is a pullback on the heroes that have dominated Season 5 so far. Doctrine, the newest support hero, loses damage and healing from Infuse (90 to 80 damage, 120 to 110 healing) and sees longer cooldowns on Shrouded Momentum and Infuse itself. Ana takes the bigger hit of the two support nerfs, with Biotic Grenade's explosion damage cut from 90 to 60 — a significant reduction for a grenade that had been punishing cooldown usage hard.
On the flip side, several heroes who had fallen behind get real buffs. Junker Queen gains base health (375 to 425, or 500 in 6v6) and a faster Carnage cooldown. Mauga picks up more armor and stronger Incendiary Chaingun burn damage. Reaper gets a flat base health increase from 275 to 300, and Illari's Solar Rifle now charges faster while her Healing Pylon heals for more per projectile. Brigitte also improves, with a shorter Inspire cooldown and more instant healing.
A few changes are more about counterplay than power level: Sombra's Hack duration and Cyberspace Weaken effect both shrink, but her EMP now overrides enemy hacks on health packs, and Hanzo's Sonic Disruption can no longer override Sombra's hacked health packs either. Vendetta, the Season 5 damage hero introduced alongside Doomfist's return, loses leap speed and knockback on Palatine Fang and Whirlwind Dash, a deliberate nerf given the character's role in the story this patch wraps up.
03Taking Reign: The Reign of Talon Story Comes to a Head
The patch's headline feature is Taking Reign, a five-week event running from November 3 through December 7 that closes out Overwatch's first year-long story arc. Players climb through 24 reward tiers by completing games and challenges, with a new Sigma epic skin available on the free track. Upgrading to the Premium Pass for 1,000 Overwatch Coins unlocks Doomfist's Resurgence legendary skin immediately, then works toward Vendetta's new legendary weapon skin, Anima Fang, as the tiers progress.

Narratively, Taking Reign follows Doomfist's reclamation of Talon's leadership after Vendetta's defeat — the same beat that closes out the cinematic short In the Wolf's Mouth, which Blizzard released on October 29. Blizzard has called Reign of Talon the game's first attempt at a year-long narrative arc, and Taking Reign is the official close to that story.
04Excavation Initiative Returns With Loot Boxes
Running on the same November 3 to December 7 schedule, the Excavation Initiative event brings back a straightforward loot box grind. Completing three "digs" each week earns a standard Loot Box, and continuing to dig beyond that threshold earns bonus Loot Boxes, Epic Loot Boxes, and eventually a single Legendary Loot Box for players who keep at it through the full five weeks.

Unlike Taking Reign's cosmetic-tier track, Excavation Initiative doesn't require a Premium Pass purchase — it's a pure play-time event, so there's no reason not to knock out the weekly digs even if you're not chasing the Sigma or Doomfist skins from the other track.
05What's Next for Overwatch's Story
Blizzard is backing the in-game event with fresh lore content on its official channels. On November 5, the PlayOverwatch YouTube channel published "Terms of Justice," a short story reading by Cherise Boothe — the voice actor behind Sojourn — covering what comes next for Overwatch now that Vendetta has fallen. That followed "All That Follows," a short story about Doctrine and the newly reformed Talon meeting for the first time since Vendetta's defeat, and sits alongside an ongoing Sojourn storyline being told exclusively through the Webtoon app.

Between the hero changes, the two concurrent seasonal events, and the amount of lore Blizzard is pushing out around the Reign of Talon's ending, this is one of the busier patches Overwatch has had this year. Expect the meta to keep shifting over the next few days as players adjust to the Doctrine and Ana nerfs in Competitive play.
