Capcom's official Long Sword overview for Monster Hunter Wilds runs just 57 seconds, but it covers the whole weapon: fast combos, counters, a Spirit Gauge that climbs from white to red, and Focus Mode attacks on wounds. This breakdown turns that minute into things you can actually practice, using Capcom's official web manual for the inputs and the official update notes for every Long Sword change since launch.

01What Capcom's Long Sword Video Shows

The video was posted on the official Monster Hunter YouTube channel on August 10, 2024, months before launch. It ends on a "2025 Wishlist Now" card, so you are watching pre-release footage. It has no chapters, so this breakdown follows the order of the video instead of listing timestamps. After a close-up of a bone-and-fur Long Sword and the title card, the hunter fights a large monster that burrows through desert sand. Five on-screen captions carry the whole lesson:

  • "A weapon that excels at swift movements and combos." The hunter weaves in and out around the monster's head and legs, never staying put.
  • "With a sharp eye and good timing, you can counter incoming attacks." The monster lunges, and the hunter answers with a counter instead of rolling away.
  • "Landing certain attacks will raise the level of the Spirit Gauge." A sword-shaped gauge appears in the top-left corner and fills up as hits land.
  • "Once the Spirit Gauge turns red, some of your attacks will be strengthened." The gauge turns red and the slashes get flashier.
  • "Use Focus Mode to target a monster's wounds and weak points." Red wounds light up on the monster's body, and the clip ends on glowing strikes aimed at those wounds.

Capcom posted the same clip on X the day it went up on YouTube, with the pitch "For those who have studied the blade."

02The Controls You Need First

Capcom's official weapons page lists the Long Sword as "Unable to Guard." That one detail shapes everything below. Here are the core inputs from the web manual, using default controller settings (PlayStation / Xbox):

MoveInputWhat it does
Overhead Slash comboTriangle / Y, repeatedOverhead Slash, Overhead Slash, Crescent Slash. Fills the Spirit Gauge
Thrust, Rising SlashCircle / B, then Circle / BShort poke that mixes into your combos
Spirit Blade I-III, Spirit RoundslashR2 / RT, repeatedUses up the gauge. A Spirit Roundslash that lands raises the gauge one level

03The Spirit Gauge Loop, Step by Step

Every Long Sword hunt comes down to one loop: fill the gauge, spend it to raise its level, then keep it red. According to the manual, hits fill the gauge and Spirit Blade attacks use it up. A Spirit Roundslash or Focus Strike that lands raises the gauge one level. At red, the gauge is at its maximum level. Some attacks get stronger, and you unlock follow-ups like the Crimson Slash I-II-III combo on Triangle / Y.

  1. Fill: use the Overhead Slash combo (Triangle / Y) until the gauge is full.
  2. Spend and raise: press R2 / RT four times for Spirit Blade I, II, III and Spirit Roundslash. Land the Roundslash and the gauge goes up a level.
  3. Stay red: once you are red, a Spirit Roundslash or Spinning Crimson Slash that lands keeps the gauge red for longer.

When you want to stay in place at red, use Capcom's recommended stationary combo: Crimson Slash I, Rising Slash, Crimson Slash I.

04Counters, Offsets and Power Clashes

Wilds adds two general systems: Offset Attacks and Power Clashes. A Power Clash only triggers when you block certain attacks, so the Long Sword can't use it. Capcom's manual also doesn't list a dedicated Offset move for the Long Sword, unlike the Great Sword's Offset Rising Slash or the Hammer's Upswing. Your defense is the two counters from the video:

  • Foresight Slash (R2 + Circle / RT + B mid-combo) uses up the whole gauge but has a large invulnerability window. If it dodges a monster's attack and then connects, the gauge fills completely. Press R2 / RT right after for a Spirit Roundslash. At red you can follow up with Foresight Whirl Slash instead.
  • Iai Spirit Slash comes out of Special Sheathe (R2 + Cross / RT + A). If you time it into a monster's attack, the gauge goes up one level. Iai Slash (Triangle / Y) from the same stance fills the gauge automatically for a short time.
TipIai Slash is an easy way to keep the gauge topped up: after any attack, press R2 + Cross / RT + A for Special Sheathe, then Triangle / Y. Each Iai Slash that lands fills the Spirit Gauge automatically for a short time.

05Focus Mode and Unbound Thrust

Hold L2 / LT to enter Focus Mode. Your attacks now go wherever the camera points, and your Scoutflies mark wounds in red. Keep hitting the same body part to open a wound. Hit it with Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust (R1 / RB in Focus Mode) and the thrust turns into a slash that destroys the wound and raises the gauge a level. Destroy more wounds with one strike and the gauge goes up more levels. Use the left stick to aim the thrust. The last shots of the video show Focus Mode strikes on wounds.

Spirit Thrust (R2 + Triangle / RT + Y) is your big finisher. It lowers the gauge one level but leads into Spirit Helm Breaker. At red, that leads into Spirit Release Slash. You can cancel Helm Breaker with Square / X if the monster moves.

06A Practice Routine for the Training Area

Run through these drills in the Training Area before you take the weapon into a real hunt. Each one builds on the last, so do them in order.

The Long Sword drills at a glance

  1. 1In the Training Area, repeat the Overhead Slash combo on Triangle / Y until the Spirit Gauge is full.2 min
  2. 2Press R2 / RT four times for Spirit Blade I, II, III and Spirit Roundslash, and watch the gauge move up a level when the Roundslash lands.3 min
  3. 3Repeat the loop until the gauge turns red, then land Spirit Roundslash or Spinning Crimson Slash to keep it red longer.3 min
  4. 4At red, practice Crimson Slash I, Rising Slash, Crimson Slash I without moving.2 min
  5. 5Mid-combo, press R2 + Circle / RT + B, then R2 / RT for Spirit Roundslash until the input feels automatic.3 min
  6. 6After an attack, press R2 + Cross / RT + A, then switch between Iai Slash on Triangle / Y and Iai Spirit Slash on R2 / RT.3 min
  7. 7Hold L2 / LT and press R1 / RB for Unbound Thrust, steering it with the left stick.2 min
  8. 8At red, chain Spirit Thrust into Spirit Helm Breaker and Spirit Release Slash, and practice canceling Helm Breaker with Square / X.2 min

07What Title Updates Changed for the Long Sword

The Long Sword has had one big tuning pass since launch plus a few smaller fixes. Here are all of them from Capcom's official notes, oldest first:

VersionLong Sword change
Ver.1.011 (May 28, 2025)Fixed Spirit Helm Breaker hits not registering after a wound was destroyed mid-sequence.
Ver.1.020, Title Update 2 (June 30, 2025)Crimson Slash II elemental scaling significantly increased. Crimson Slash III raw damage and element/ailment scaling increased, and it now chains faster into Spirit Blade I. Spirit Release Slash, Spinning Crimson Slash, Spirit Roundslash at red, and Iai Spirit Slash at white and yellow gauge all hit harder. Crimson Slash I element/ailment scaling decreased.
Ver.1.021 (August 13, 2025)Shorter delay chaining Special Sheathe into Iai Spirit Slash, and a slightly longer window to perform it.
Ver.1.021.02.00 (August 19, 2025)Fixed a shortened invulnerability window on successful Iai Spirit Slashes against attacks with long hit detection.
Ver.1.040, Title Update 4 (December 16, 2025)Special Sheathe stays active longer while you wait. Spirit Release Slash no longer hits captured monsters. Fixed a delay drawing the weapon after Spirit Release Slash. Spirit Thrust, Spirit Helm Breaker and Spirit Blade II can now trigger bonus damage skills.

Ver.1.021 was part of a wider buff pass. Director Yuya Tokuda's August 2025 Director's Letter listed the Long Sword among 11 weapon types getting upward adjustments.

“We have implemented upwards adjustments for each weapon type, focusing on expanding playstyle options. We encourage hunters to try each of the weapons out again after the update is live.”Yuya Tokuda, Director, Monster Hunter Wilds

The notes for Ver.1.041 and the Ver.1.042 patches don't mention the Long Sword at all, so its moveset hasn't changed since Title Update 4.

08Current Version and What Comes Next

The newest patch is Ver.1.042.00.02, a Steam-only fix released August 14, 2026. Capcom's update list shows PS5's latest patch as Ver.1.042.00.01 (August 7, 2026) and Xbox Series X|S's as Ver.1.042.00.00 (August 4, 2026). A Nintendo Switch 2 version launches December 4, 2026. The expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is scheduled for 2027 and adds a Boost Bracer that powers up certain attacks. Capcom has said Boosted Action videos for each weapon will post daily until September 15, but any new Long Sword moves are unconfirmed until you can play them. For now, everything above applies to the live game on Steam, PS5 and Xbox.

FAQ

Is the Long Sword good for beginners in Monster Hunter Wilds?

It is a friendly first pick if you like to keep moving. Capcom describes it as a weapon that excels at swift movements and combos, and its core combos only use Triangle / Y and R2 / RT. The catch is that it cannot guard, so you rely on movement, Foresight Slash and Iai Spirit Slash for defense.

How do you turn the Spirit Gauge red in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Fill the gauge with attacks, then land a Spirit Roundslash (the fourth R2 / RT press) or a Focus Strike to raise it one level at a time. A perfectly timed Iai Spirit Slash also raises it a level. Red is the maximum level.

Can the Long Sword guard or trigger a Power Clash?

No. Capcom lists the Long Sword as unable to guard, and Power Clashes only happen when you guard certain attacks. Use Foresight Slash and Iai Spirit Slash as your counters instead.

What did Title Update 4 change for the Long Sword?

Ver.1.040 made Special Sheathe stay active longer while you wait and stopped Spirit Release Slash from hitting captured monsters. It also fixed a weapon-draw delay after Spirit Release Slash and let Spirit Thrust, Spirit Helm Breaker and Spirit Blade II trigger bonus damage skills.

What is the current Monster Hunter Wilds version?

The latest patch is Ver.1.042.00.02 on Steam, released August 14, 2026. Capcom's update list shows Ver.1.042.00.01 as the latest on PS5 and Ver.1.042.00.00 on Xbox Series X|S. None of the Ver.1.041 or Ver.1.042 patches changed the Long Sword.
