Baldur's Gate 3 Honour Mode Guide: How to Survive Act 1
Baldur's Gate 3 Honour Mode guide for Act 1: what changes from Tactician, a safe party, and how to beat every boss Legendary Action before it ends your run.
Honour Mode is where most Baldur's Gate 3 runs go to die, and Act 1 claims more of them than it should. The act is full of optional fights with bosses that now react on your turn, and one bad round erases dozens of hours because there is no reload. This guide covers exactly what the mode changes, a party that stays alive, and how to take apart every Act 1 boss that gained a Legendary Action.
01What Honour Mode Changes Compared With Tactician
Larian added Honour Mode in Patch 5, and the Community Update #25 announcement describes it as a step up from Tactician with "over 30 new tweaks" to boss fights built on a new Legendary Action system. Under the hood, Honour Mode uses Tactician's enemy aggression, character power, enemy loadouts and additional combat mechanics, then layers its own ruleset and save rules on top. The bg3.wiki difficulty page lists the settings side by side:
| Setting | Tactician | Honour |
|---|---|---|
| Ruleset | Standard | Honour Ruleset |
| Save system | Normal saves and reloads | One save file, overwritten on quicksave, autosave, quitting or returning to the menu |
| Boss Legendary Actions | Dragons only | Bosses across all three acts |
| Long rest cost | 80 camp supplies | 80 camp supplies |
| Trader price modifier | 3x | 3x |
| Party wipe | Reload | Continue in Custom mode (Honour ends) or delete the save |
| Reward | Critical Hit achievement | Foehammer achievement and the golden "Shining Honour" D20 |
The Honour Ruleset also tightens the action economy. Per the wiki's Patch 5 documentation, extra actions from Haste or an Elixir of Bloodlust no longer benefit from Extra Attack (Action Surge still does), Pact of the Blade no longer stacks with Extra Attack, and Mind Sanctuary only hastens characters. Damage riders were also reworked so bonuses no longer multiply off each other, which kills the famous damage-stacking builds. None of that bites hard in Act 1, but plan your build around it now so you are not surprised in Act 2.

02Rules to Live By Before You Leave the Nautiloid
Your biggest enemy is the save file, not the dice. Because the game overwrites your one save whenever it autosaves or you quicksave, there is no safe snapshot before a boss. Treat every dialogue that can turn hostile as a combat encounter: long rest first, prebuff, position, then talk.
If you want a rehearsal, start a Custom game with the Honour Ruleset. The bosses get the same Legendary Actions, but you can leave the single-save system off and reload freely while you learn the fights. Once a boss stops surprising you, take the real run in.
Next, respect the downed rules. A downed character dies after three failed death saves, ranged hits on a downed ally count as an automatic failure, and melee attacks always crit a downed target for two failures. One goblin with a club can finish a downed ally before your turn comes around, so pick them up immediately. The Help action or any healing gets them back up, and dead companions can be resurrected by Withers at camp for 200 gold.
03A Safe Act 1 Party Composition
You do not need a min-maxed build to clear Act 1 on Honour Mode. You need four things: a front line that survives focus fire, bonus-action healing, a way to shut enemies down, and reliable damage that is not all physical. This lineup covers all four with companions you meet early:
| Role | Pick | Why it keeps you alive |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | Lae'zel (Fighter) or Karlach (Barbarian) | High HP and heavy weapon damage; Karlach's Rage soaks physical hits once she joins. |
| Healer and support | Shadowheart (Cleric) | Healing Word is a bonus action with an 18m range, and Bless adds 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws for up to three allies. Clerics also reach Silence, a key counter below. |
| Control | Gale (Wizard) | Area control and non-physical damage for bosses that shrug off weapons. |
| Flex damage | Astarion (Rogue) or Wyll (Warlock) | Safe ranged damage from high ground, which is where most Act 1 fights are won. |
If you play a custom Tav, fill whichever gap your character leaves. Two sources of Healing Word are worth more than one extra damage dealer on this difficulty, because the downed rules punish slow pickups. And carry scrolls of Revivify when you find them, so a death mid-fight does not have to wait for camp.
One rule applies to every boss below: the Legendary Action mechanic can typically be blocked if the boss is Incapacitated, Stunned, Unconscious, Restrained or Fleeing. Control spells are not just damage prevention on Honour Mode; they switch off the boss's reaction too.
04Every Act 1 Legendary Action and Its Counter
Legendary Actions trigger at the end of another creature's turn, usually in response to being hit, and recharge at the start of each round. These are the Act 1 bosses that get one:
| Boss | Legendary Action | What it does | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owlbear (mother) | Call Consort | Once per combat, summons her mate when she is attacked | Cast Silence on her first, or skip the fight |
| Auntie Ethel | Weird Magic Surge | After a spell is cast, adds illusory duplicates and shuffles her position; higher-level spells create more | Weapon attacks and low-level spells |
| Dror Ragzlin | Devoted Galvanism, plus Arachnid Compulsion | Grants Action Surge to Absolutists within 5m when you target them; can take control of nearby spiders | Kill his allies away from him |
| Phase Spider Matriarch | Gossamer Tomb | Entombs whoever attacks her spiderlings; the web explodes for 10d8 poison unless burned or dissolved | Fire or acid ready, attack spiderlings out of her sight |
| Spectator | Ocular Nightmare | After 5 Paranoid Dreams stacks: 4d8+3 necrotic plus possible Wound, Confuse, Paralyse and Frighten on all foes within 20m | Fewer, bigger hits |
| Bulette | Shredding Scales | While its 100 temporary HP Diamond Scales hold, answers hits with a 3m burst of 3d6 slashing and Bleeding | Strip the scales from range |
| Bernard | Leaping Static | Hits an attacker with 3d8 lightning that chains to up to three more characters within 6m | Spread out, or talk your way past |
| Nere | Psionic Visage | Three copies make him immune to physical damage; attacks detonate them for 2d6 psychic and a push | Spells, not weapons |
| Grym | Adamantine Reverberation | 10 temporary HP and double movement; losing it releases a 4d8 thunder shockwave with a 4m knockback | Pop it from range |
| Inquisitor W'wargaz | Mind-Claw of Tu'narath | Twice per round, summons a psionic blade when he or an ally is struck, and can then link its target with Mindsteal Link | Focus him, avoid chip damage on his allies |
Your pre-boss checklist
- 1Enter any boss room or hostile dialogue with full HP and spell slots, since your one save is overwritten constantly.1 min
- 2Check the boss's tooltip for its Legendary Action and decide which attacks will trigger it before you open combat.1 min
- 3Cast Bless and your other buffs before talking, and keep party members more than 6m apart against chaining or area reactions.1 min
- 4Put ranged characters on elevation and keep your front line between the boss and your healer.1 min
- 5Open with control that leaves the boss Incapacitated, Stunned or Restrained, or Silence the Owlbear, so its Legendary Action cannot fire.Round 1
- 6Remove allies that fuel the boss, like Dror Ragzlin's Absolutists, away from the boss before committing to it.Rounds 2-4
- 7Use Healing Word or Help on a downed ally the same round, because melee hits on a downed target count as two failed death saves.Every round
05The Fights That End Runs, and How to Handle Them
Commander Zhalk on the Nautiloid
You do not have to kill him. On Tactician-level character power Zhalk has 195 HP, AC 18 and Extra Attack, and a level 1 party gains nothing from the fight except the Everburn Blade. Run for the helm. The cheapest early death in Honour Mode is pride.
The Owlbear nest
The mother is only level 3 but has 118 HP on Honour, and Call Consort brings in a mate with the same base stats. The fight is optional and can be skipped with Animal Handling, Survival or Performance checks, or Speak with Animals. If you want the fight, open with Silence on her: Call Consort cannot be used while she is Silenced.
The goblin leaders in the Shattered Sanctum
Dror Ragzlin has 97 HP and AC 14, a Barbarian's Rage and Extra Attack, and seven named allies in his throne room. On Honour, targeting any Absolutist within 5m of him lets him grant that ally Action Surge, so an ordinary round of attacks can hand a goblin two actions. Pull or lure his allies away and kill them first, then fight Dror alone. Stay clear of the spider pit, because Arachnid Compulsion can turn those spiders against you. Minthara, a level 6 Oath of Vengeance Paladin, is in the same building, so never let the fight spread through the whole camp at once.
Auntie Ethel
Weird Magic Surge punishes spell-heavy parties: every spell cast gives her more duplicates to hide among, and the bigger the spell, the more copies she gets. Lean on weapon attacks to peel the illusions and save your big spells for the moment she is exposed. Whether cantrips trigger the surge is not documented, so treat them as a risk. Note that bg3.wiki records a bug where Silence does not stop this reaction.
Phase Spider Matriarch in the Whispering Depths
She has 162 HP and AC 17 on Honour, teleports with Ethereal Jaunt, and hatches spiderlings. Attack one of those spiderlings in her line of sight and she can entomb you in a web that deals 10d8 poison damage when it bursts. Keep a character with fire damage ready to burn a trapped ally free, kill the eggs before the fight starts if you can, and use fire on the web bridges to drop spiders into fall damage.

The Underdark: Spectator, Bulette and Bernard
The Spectator gains a Paranoid Dreams stack every time it is struck, and multi-hit attacks like Magic Missile add one stack per hit. At five it fires Ocular Nightmare at everything within 20m. Hit it with few, heavy attacks, remember that grenades do not add stacks, and note that each Eye Ray it uses removes one. The Bulette starts with 100 temporary HP of Diamond Scales, and Shredding Scales only works while they last, so burn through them with ranged attacks from outside its 3m burst before melee closes in. Bernard in the Arcane Tower can be avoided entirely with the right dialogue after reading The Roads to Darkness; if you fight him, keep everyone more than 6m apart so Leaping Static cannot chain.
Grymforge: Nere and Grym
Nere's Psionic Visage makes him immune to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing while the copies are up, and attacking him detonates them. Bring spell damage, and watch the lava around the arena. Grym is the hardest fight in Act 1 on paper: level 10, AC 18, 450 HP on Honour, and immune to all damage until lava makes it Superheated, which turns bludgeoning into a vulnerability. Lure it under the forge hammer for 12d8 bludgeoning, doubled while Superheated, and knock off its 10 temporary HP with a ranged hit while your party stands clear of the 4m shockwave.
Inquisitor W'wargaz in Crèche Y'llek
W'wargaz has 145 HP, AC 17, Legendary Resistance on Tactician and Honour, and a Githyanki Parry that reduces damage by 10. Bait the Parry with opportunity attacks before your real hits, and do not waste save-or-suck spells into his Legendary Resistance. Each time you strike one of his four allies, he can summon another Mind-Claw, so focus him instead of spreading chip damage around the room.
06Current Patch Status for Honour Mode
Patch 8, Larian's final major patch, fixed several Honour Mode problems, including damage riders being added multiple times and difficulty settings not saving after a Game Over. The newest build is Hotfix #36, version 4.1.1.7209685, released on 26 March 2026. It fixes a savegame-loading framerate drop and crash, plus a Mac bug that blocked Honour Mode players after Character Creation. Larian has not announced new balance changes since, so the numbers in this guide reflect the current game on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Patch 5 is now live for Baldur’s Gate 3! Today’s update includes brand-new epilogue scenes, Honour Mode, and much much more. For a detailed overview of Patch 5, check out the latest community update at https://t.co/fYZdZvuKIt Want more info but in bite-size chunks? Read on! https://t.co/lyI6SQgz7Y

Take Act 1 slowly, skip the fights that give you nothing, and treat every Legendary Action as a rule you must play around. Get your party to the Act 2 transition with your resources intact and your run is already ahead of most attempts.
FAQ
What is the difference between Honour Mode and Tactician in Baldur's Gate 3?
Honour Mode uses Tactician's enemy settings but adds the Honour Ruleset, which gives bosses Legendary Actions and tightens the action economy and damage stacking. It also limits you to a single save file, and a party wipe either ends the run or turns it into a Custom game.
Can you practise Honour Mode without losing your save?
Yes. Start a Custom game with the Honour Ruleset and leave the single-save system off. Bosses get the same Legendary Actions, but you can reload after a wipe.
What is the hardest boss in Act 1 on Honour Mode?
On raw stats it is Grym in Grymforge: level 10, AC 18 and 450 HP, immune to damage until lava makes it Superheated. Lure it under the forge hammer and pop its Adamantine Reverberation temporary HP from range.
What happens if a companion dies in Honour Mode?
A single death does not end the run; only a full party wipe does. Revive the companion with a Revivify scroll or pay Withers 200 gold at camp to resurrect them.
Should you fight Commander Zhalk on Honour Mode?
No. The fight is optional, and Zhalk has 195 HP, AC 18 and Extra Attack at Tactician-level power against a level 1 party. Head for the helm instead.
