Enshrouded 1.0 Guide: Cinder's Cradle and New Mage Builds

Enshrouded's 1.0 launch adds the Cinder's Cradle biome, a level 50 cap, nine new mage spells and Sparkworks logic blocks — here's where to start.

Enshrouded left Steam Early Access on October 15 with its 1.0 update, and it isn't a small patch. Keen Games added an entire new biome, raised the level cap, reworked the mage class with nine new spells, and shipped a logic-building toolset called Sparkworks. If you played during Early Access or you're jumping in for the first time, here's what actually changed and how to approach it.

01What's New in Enshrouded 1.0

The headline addition is Cinder's Cradle, a new region north of the Veilwater Basin gates that only opens once you've progressed far enough into the main story. It's built in two connected layers: a lava-scarred wasteland of ruins below, and a set of floating islands held aloft by the Ancients above. Both halves are threaded together by tendrils of the Shroud, and both are guarded by enemies you haven't fought anywhere else in Embervale.

Alongside the new biome, two additional Hollow Halls dungeons opened up in the Albaneve Summits and the Veilwater Basin — the Veilwater one is underwater, so pack whatever lets you breathe and see down there before you dive in. Keen also expanded the outer edges of the Springlands, Blackmire and Kindlewastes regions, added new Shroud Roots for skill points across the map, and closed out the main story — for now. The Shroud and the Fell are still around after the credits, which the team has said leaves room for future content.

02Picking Your Build: Juggernaut, Ranger or Battlemage

Enshrouded's skill tree still lets you build toward a heavily armored melee juggernaut, a ranged specialist with bows, or a battlemage who leans on spells — or blend all three into something your own. If you're starting fresh in 1.0, don't feel locked into one lane early: pick up a few points in each branch while you're still in the early biomes and commit once you've actually tried the weapon types firsthand.

The juggernaut path still rewards stacking heavy armor and greatswords and just outlasting whatever's in front of you, and it remains the most forgiving option if you're playing solo and don't want to manage cooldowns or ammo. The ranger path benefits from the improved targeting Keen shipped alongside the wand changes — soft and hard lock now favor whatever's closest to the center of your screen and nearest to you, which makes kiting groups noticeably less fiddly than it was before 1.0. What's different now is that magic got a serious pass, which makes a battlemage build considerably more appealing than it was in Early Access, especially if you tried it once, bounced off the limited spell list, and never went back.

03The Mage Overhaul and Nine New Spells

Keen Games rebuilt the mystic classes for 1.0, adding nine new spells: Mana Drain, Entangle, Pillar of Flames, Blizzard, Ball Lightning, and four summon spells — Fire Totem, Ice Totem, Shock Totem and Hollow Skeleton. Entangle is built for crowd control against tougher single targets, while Blizzard and Ball Lightning are the new area-of-effect options for groups. Mana Drain siphons mana from enemies into your own pool instead of just dealing damage.

Existing spells also got more versions as you progress through biomes, so a favorite combination from an early-game area doesn't become useless later. There are now 22 tier-7 "Eternal" spell versions, which don't consume spell ammo to cast and can be upgraded with their own perks, similar to weapons and armor. Wands were reworked too: heavy attacks now pierce through the first enemy hit, and two new wand skills — an aerial attack usable mid-air and an evasion attack with wider, piercing projectiles — give wand combat more room to breathe. Mana costs and cast times across the board were rebalanced against each spell's actual damage output.

TipEarly Access players: the three decorative Redeem Add-Ons props can be claimed multiple times, so if a friend never played Early Access, you can drop one for them in their own world too.

04Reaching Cinder's Cradle and Its New Threats

Cinder's Cradle sits behind the gates past Veilwater Basin, and you won't get there by accident — the gates stay closed until your main quest progress opens them. Once you're in, treat it like an endgame zone: upgrade your gear and cook your best food buffs before engaging the guardians patrolling the floating islands, since Keen built this biome specifically to test players who've already cleared the rest of Embervale. The ruins below are worth exploring carefully too — some areas are lost to the Shroud and others to simple decay, and both hide crafting materials that don't show up anywhere else in the game.

Don't rush straight for the floating islands on your first visit. The lava-and-ruins layer below is the easier half of the biome and a more reasonable place to get your bearings, restock arrows or spell ammo, and bank a few of the new Shroud Roots before you commit to the vertical climb above. The guardians up top hit noticeably harder than anything in Springlands, Blackmire or Kindlewastes, and there's no shame in retreating to craft a better set of armor before trying again.

05Building With Sparkworks

The other major 1.0 addition is Sparkworks, a logic system for your base that connects inputs — a lever, a pressure plate, a tripwire — to outputs, like a door opening or a trapdoor dropping. It's the first time Enshrouded has let you wire up genuinely interactive builds rather than purely decorative ones, and it plugs directly into the voxel building tools you already know. If you've been wanting to build puzzle rooms, automated farms, or a trapdoor under a bridge your co-op friends don't know about, this is the system that finally makes it possible.

06Leveling to 50 and Gearing to 55

The level cap rose from 1.0's previous ceiling to a new maximum of 50, and gear can now be upgraded up to item level 55. Most of that extra progression room comes from pushing into Cinder's Cradle and its new Shroud Roots, so don't expect to hit the new cap just by replaying the older biomes — the new region is where the late-game skill points live.

07Should You Start a New Save?

Early Access saves carry over and get automatically converted to the new, more efficient save format, so you don't lose anything by continuing. That said, Keen Games has rebuilt and tuned the first few hours of the game fairly heavily for 1.0, and the studio itself recommends starting over if you're willing, specifically to see those changes properly. If you owned Enshrouded during Early Access, you don't need to buy it again on PC, and Early Access players get three exclusive decorative base props — a four-meter statue, a tome bearing the old Early Access logo, and a beacon prop — redeemable from the "Redeem Add-Ons" button in the escape menu.

Enshrouded 1.0: Getting Started

  1. 1Load your Early Access save — it converts automatically to the new format — or start fresh to see Keen's reworked opening hours.5 min
  2. 2Open the escape menu and hit "Redeem Add-Ons" to claim your statue, tome and beacon props if you played before 1.0.2 min
  3. 3Put a few early points into juggernaut, ranger and battlemage skills before committing — the mage overhaul makes spells worth testing properly this time.1-2 hours
  4. 4Work through story content and the expanded edges of Springlands, Blackmire and Kindlewastes to approach the new level cap.10+ hours
  5. 5Progress the main quest until the gates past Veilwater Basin unlock, then gear up before heading in.Varies
  6. 6Explore the ruins and lava floor of Cinder's Cradle, banking Shroud Roots and materials before climbing to the floating islands.2-4 hours
  7. 7Craft your first logic pieces — a lever and a door, or a pressure plate and a trap — to learn how inputs and outputs connect.30 min
  8. 8Bring underwater gear for the Veilwater Basin dungeon and tackle both new Hollow Halls for additional gear and materials.1-2 hours

08Tips for a Smooth Return to Embervale

  • Enshrouded 1.0 is not cross-platform at launch, so squads need to stick to one platform for co-op, which supports up to 16 players at once.
  • Xbox Series X|S players are still waiting — Keen Games confirmed that version is now targeting spring 2027, so PC and PlayStation 5 are the only 1.0 platforms for the moment.
  • If your hardest fights in Early Access felt like a slog, give them another shot: Keen specifically revisited its toughest existing boss fight for 1.0 to cut down on repetitive, drawn-out attempts.
  • Check the in-game "Redeem Add-Ons" menu even if you forgot you had Early Access rewards waiting — they're easy to miss on a fresh load-in.
  • Sparkworks pieces are unlocked through crafting like any other building part, so you'll need to progress a little before you can wire up anything elaborate — don't expect to automate your starting hut on day one.
  • If you and your group are jumping back in after a long break, read the full patch notes before you touch your old base. Keen's save-format changes and building fixes mean a few older structures can shift slightly on load, and it's easier to fix that with friends online than to discover it mid-raid.
