Rust Livestock Update: Cows, Sheep, and New Loot Rooms Go Live

Facepunch's October patch adds farmable cows and sheep with genetics, a Biofuel Generator, reworked sandbags, and new Powergrid Lootrooms to Rust.

Facepunch Studios shipped Rust's October content update on October 1, 2026, and it carries the game's standard forced monthly server wipe. Officially called the Livestock Update, the patch's headline feature is animal husbandry: players can now capture wild cows and sheep, breed them for better genetics, and turn a base into a working farm. Beyond the farming systems, the update adds a new fuel-generating deployable, reworks one of Rust's oldest cover pieces, and locks fresh loot behind the Powerplant's electrical grid.

TipIf you've been breeding plants for high-end genes, don't assume the same process works on livestock — Facepunch says cow and sheep genetics behave differently from crops, so test on a small herd before committing all your pens to one bloodline.

01Cows, Sheep, and the New Genetics System

The patch introduces two farmable animals, cows and sheep, that behave differently from Rust's existing wildlife. Both produce dung, cows additionally produce milk, and sheep produce wool; all of it stacks on top of the usual meat, bone, and leather you can harvest from an animal corpse. Facepunch says there are "multiple ways to capture wild livestock, some more efficient than others," and once captured, the animals can be bred using the same underlying genetics system that already governs Rust's crops — though the developers caution that "the genes won't behave exactly like plants, so old techniques may not apply." New animal gate and fence deployables ship alongside the animals so players can actually pen them in. On the server side, Facepunch addressed the obvious scaling concern directly: NPC processing is now distributed across frames with a hardcoded time budget, and the underlying navigation system has at least doubled in performance since the previous patch, so a busier farm shouldn't translate into a direct frame-rate hit.

02Selling Animals, Milk, and Wool at the Ranch

Raising livestock isn't just for crafting materials — grown cows and sheep can be led to a Stable and sold to a new NPC vendor for a randomized bundle of resources scaled to the animal's genetic quality. Players can reject an offer and ask for a new one up to two more times before the vendor gets annoyed and refuses to trade with them for 15 minutes. Wool follows the same haggling system, with better payouts for turning in more at once, up to a 400-wool cap. Milk opens its own small crafting chain: left in a refrigerator for four hours, it can be skimmed into Skimmed Milk and Cream, both of which modify the duration or potency of tea effects when used in recipes, alongside new food items like Beef and Mutton variants, Shepherd's Pie, and Beef Pie.

03Biofuel Generator and the Sandbag Barricade Rework

The update also adds the Biofuel Generator, a new deployable built to make use of raw or spoiled meat that would otherwise go to waste. It converts organic matter into low-grade fuel, but it has to be stirred by hand roughly every 30 minutes to keep producing — players can wire up an I/O connection to get an alert when it needs attention instead of checking on it constantly. The amount of fuel it outputs scales with the caloric value of whatever gets thrown in. Separately, Sandbag Barricades have been reworked into four stackable stages, with the final stage becoming a pillbox variant; all existing Sandbag skins carry over to every stage. Facepunch lowered the deployable's crafting cost to offset the extra stacking requirement, and loot spawns now hand out stacks of four instead of one, with the maximum stack size raised to 20.

04New Powergrid Lootrooms Across 13 Monuments

Building on the Powerplant loot room Facepunch added in a previous update, the Livestock Update spreads the same idea to new locked rooms across 13 monuments: Airfield, Ferry Terminal, both Harbour locations, Junkyard, Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Nuclear Missile Silo, Radtown, Sewer Branch, Trainyard, and Water Treatment Plant. Each room stays locked until enough Heavy Fuses have been inserted at the Powerplant to generate the required power, and tougher monuments demand more fuses than beginner-friendly ones. Facepunch also tuned the system for low-population servers: heavy fuse decay now scales with player count, lasting up to four times longer on servers with 10 or fewer players online, and the small heavy fuse box at the Powerplant has been relocated so it's reachable from outside through a broken window.

05Critters, Swimmers, and Everything Else

Alongside the farmable animals, Rust's world now has smaller ambient creatures meant purely to make the island feel more alive: frogs, rabbits, and squirrels on land, plus sea turtles, crabs, and jellyfish in the water. Facepunch says these "critters" are heavily budgeted and mostly act as set dressing rather than interactive wildlife, so they shouldn't cost much in server or client performance. The patch's other changes include client-predicted grenades, C4, and satchels — reducing the throw delay players feel at higher ping — a high-resolution machete model refresh, a redesigned country-selection UI in the server browser, and a memory optimization that removed 133 duplicate hand meshes from viewmodels, saving roughly 100MB. The Air Wolf helipad at Bandit Camp also starts each wipe in disrepair and now requires a communal hammer-and-resources effort before the vehicle vendor there will sell anything.

06How to Get the Livestock Update

The Livestock Update is already live on every Rust server that has applied this month's forced wipe, and it downloads automatically through Steam the next time you launch the game. There's no separate opt-in or beta branch — if your server wiped on October 1 or later, you're on the new build. Players who want the full list of smaller fixes, including performance and store-asset changes not covered above, can read Facepunch's complete devblog linked below.

How do I get cows and sheep in Rust?

You capture wild cows and sheep out in the open world using the new capture methods Facepunch added, then pen them behind the update's new animal gates and fences to breed and raise them.

What do cows and sheep produce in Rust?

Both animals produce dung, cows additionally produce milk, and sheep produce wool, on top of the meat, bones, and leather you get from harvesting them like any other animal.

What does the Biofuel Generator do?

It's a new deployable that converts raw or spoiled meat into low-grade fuel, but it has to be stirred by hand roughly every 30 minutes to keep producing.

Where are Rust's new Powergrid Lootrooms?

Facepunch added them to 13 monuments, including Airfield, Launch Site, Military Tunnels, and Water Treatment Plant; each one unlocks once enough Heavy Fuses are inserted at the Powerplant.
