Minecraft Trial Chambers: How to Find, Clear and Farm the Mace
Find and clear Minecraft Trial Chambers: Y levels, maps, trial spawners, Breeze and Bogged tips, ominous trials, vault loot and how to farm the Mace.
Trial Chambers are Minecraft's copper-and-tuff combat dungeons, and they are the only place you can get Breeze Rods, Heavy Cores and therefore the Mace. This walkthrough takes you from finding one to clearing its ominous vaults, with every mechanic checked against the Minecraft Wiki and Mojang's own notes for Java Edition 26.3, the Wilderness Bound drop that released on September 15, 2026.
01Where Trial Chambers Generate (Y Levels and Rules)
Trial Chambers are buried in the Overworld in every biome except the deep dark. The starting room generates between Y=-40 and Y=-20, but the structure sprawls upward, and most of its rooms sit roughly between Y=-20 and Y=0. If you are strip-mining or caving in that band and hit waxed copper, tuff bricks or copper grates, you have found one.
Three generation rules save you a lot of wasted digging:
- New chunks only. Trial Chambers only appear in chunks generated in Java Edition 1.21 or Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 and later. In an older world, travel past the edge of what you had already explored before that update.
- One per region. The world is split into a grid of 34×34-chunk regions centred on X=0, Z=0, and each region gets exactly one Trial Chambers at a random spot, unless a deep dark biome cancels it.
- Look for odd caves. Because the structure carves through the terrain, caves around it often have strangely flat walls or copper showing through.
If cheats are enabled, the fastest check is /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers in Java or /locate structure trial_chambers in Bedrock.
02Getting a Trial Chambers Map
In survival without commands, a map is the reliable route. Level a cartographer villager to Journeyman and it can offer a Trial Chambers map for 12 emeralds and a compass. The map points to the nearest Trial Chambers relative to that villager, and every map bought from the same cartographer points to the same structure, so buy one and go.
Java Edition 26.3 changed the item itself. Explorer maps are now their own items, and the old Trial Chambers Explorer Map is renamed the Buried Trial Chambers Map; any existing copies in older worlds convert automatically when you load them. Wilderness Bound also added Abandoned Camps, and the 26.3 patch notes list Trial Chambers among the structures that the new camp explorer maps can lead to. That gives you a second source if you have no village nearby.
03Gear to Bring Before You Go In
Trial Chambers are designed as a mid-game challenge, so a full iron set is the realistic minimum and diamond makes the ominous version far more forgiving. Pack this before you leave:
- A shield for Bogged and Skeleton arrows and for the dispenser traps built into the chambers.
- A sword or axe you trust. Breezes deflect every projectile except wind charges, so a bow is close to useless against them.
- Plenty of food, a stack of blocks for sealing corridors and pillaring, and torches to mark rooms you have finished.
- Empty inventory space. Vaults eject their loot as item stacks onto the floor, and ominous runs return a lot of emeralds, wind charges and arrows.
04How Trial Spawners Work
Almost every chamber and corridor holds a trial spawner. It wakes up when a Survival or Adventure player comes within 14 blocks and has line of sight to it. After that it keeps spawning even if you back off, so step in only when you are ready. The spawner produces a fixed wave (zombies, husks, skeletons, strays, Bogged, spiders, cave spiders, slimes, silverfish, baby zombies or Breezes, depending on the spawner) in a 4-block radius around itself, and it only counts as beaten once every mob it spawned is dead.
A few details matter in practice:
- More players means bigger waves. Every extra player in range raises both the total mob count and how many mobs can be alive at once. Leaving range afterwards does not shrink the wave again.
- Rewards drop for each player. When the wave is cleared the spawner ejects loot for every player it detected. On the standard table there is a 50% roll for a trial key, and when that roll hits, every player gets a key; otherwise each player gets food or a potion.
- 30-minute cooldown. A cleared spawner goes dormant for 30 minutes, and the timer keeps running even while the chunk is unloaded. That is what makes Breeze Rods and keys renewable.
- Peaceful does nothing. Trial spawners do not spawn mobs on Peaceful difficulty.
05Beating Breezes and Bogged
Breezes only exist in Trial Chambers. Their spawner is the one ringed with chiseled tuff, usually in the centre of a combat chamber, and it never appears in corridors. A Breeze has 30 health, jumps up to 15 blocks sideways and 5 blocks up, and fires wind charges within 16 blocks that deal little damage but launch you hard. Wind charges hitting the room can also flip wooden doors, trapdoors, levers and buttons, which can set off the chamber's dispenser traps.
- Fight Breezes in melee. Arrows, tridents and snowballs get deflected straight back at you.
- Stand away from ledges and holes. The knockback, not the hit, is what kills most players.
- The natural Breeze spawner allows only one Breeze at a time and two in total for a solo player, so clear the other mobs first and then deal with it one on one.
- Each Breeze drops 1-2 Breeze Rods when killed by you or a tamed wolf.
Bogged are mossy, mushroom-covered skeletons with 16 health that fire Arrows of Poison. They shoot more slowly than normal skeletons, so close the gap between volleys with your shield raised. Bogged are one of three possible ranged mobs a chamber's spawner can roll, and they may come with a chestplate.

06Vaults, Trial Keys and Normal Loot
A vault sits on a small copper pedestal in the entrance room and in rooms that have trial spawners. Use a trial key on it and it ejects 2 to 5 stacks of loot. The rule to remember is that each player can unlock each vault only once. Every player in a multiplayer world gets their own reward from the same vault, but you cannot reopen one yourself (the vault remembers its last 128 unique players).
Standard vault loot includes emeralds, arrows, iron, wind charges, honey bottles, diamonds, enchanted gear and Ominous Bottles (levels I-II). Its rare pool is where the collectibles live. Per the wiki's loot tables:
| Standard vault item | Chance per vault | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt Armor Trim | 6.2% | Exclusive trim template; clone it with 7 diamonds and a block of copper |
| Guster Banner Pattern | 4.2% | Exclusive loom pattern that is never used up |
| Music Disc (Precipice) | 4.2% | Only found here |
| Ominous Bottle I-II | 16.5% (Java) | Your ticket into ominous trials |
| Trident | 2.1% | A rare way to skip drowned farming |
One edition difference is worth knowing. On Java, every vault has an 80% chance to include a set of rare loot; on Bedrock that chance is 20%, so Bedrock players see more common stacks.
07Ominous Trials: From Bad Omen to Ominous Vaults
Ominous trials are the hard mode, and the only way to reach the best loot. They start with the Ominous Bottle, which drops from a raid captain killed outside a raid and also comes out of vaults. Drinking it gives you Bad Omen for 100 minutes. When a normal trial spawner sees you, Bad Omen turns into Trial Omen, which lasts 15 minutes multiplied by the bottle's level. A level V bottle therefore gives you 75 minutes. The level changes only the duration, not the difficulty.
Ominous Trials are now available on Java Snapshot! 🔑 Drink an ominous bottle to gain the Bad Omen effect 🔑 Head to a village for a Raid Omen and start a pillager raid OR enter a trial chamber to trigger a Trial Omen effect 🔑 Trial Omen effect will spew out tougher mobs…

While Trial Omen is active, every trial spawner within about 15 blocks that can see you turns ominous, even one on cooldown from your earlier normal run. Ominous spawners send armoured mobs with better weapons, including chainmail, iron or diamond pieces with Protection enchantments. Every 8 seconds they also hang projectiles above you and their mobs: arrows, poison or Slowness IV arrows, small fireballs, wind charges or lingering potions such as Weaving, Oozing and Infested. Keep moving so those drops land behind you.
Your ominous trial run at a glance
- 1Kill a raid captain outside a raid or loot one from a standard vault.Prep
- 2Clear it normally and note where every red-candle ominous vault altar is.20-30 min
- 3Drink the bottle away from any village so the first trial spawner that sees you converts Bad Omen into Trial Omen.1 min
- 4Fight each armoured wave and keep moving to dodge the projectiles dropped every 8 seconds.15 min per bottle level
- 5Each cleared ominous spawner has a 30% roll for a key that every player present receives.
- 6Use your keys on the ominous vaults before Trial Omen runs out, and do not drink milk.
Clearing an ominous spawner has a 30% roll for an ominous trial key, shared by every player present, and it is the only source of those keys. Take them to ominous vaults. These sit on dark altars with red candles and red glazed terracotta, and they are deliberately harder to find. Every combat chamber has one, more hide at corridor ends and in some intersections, and the wiki puts the typical total at 6-8 per structure.
“Find an ominous vault (hint: they’re trickier to locate than regular ones) and use this key on it to get some rare loot as a reward for going through the gauntlet.”Cristina Anderca, Minecraft.net author at Mojang Studios, March 2024
Two warnings. Milk, a Totem of Undying or death all remove Trial Omen, so do not drink milk to cure the Weaving or Infested effects. And do not walk into a village with Bad Omen, because it turns into Raid Omen and starts a raid instead. The wiki's pages disagree on whether Trial Omen must still be active when you use an ominous key, so treat that as unconfirmed and open your ominous vaults before the omen runs out.
08Loot Worth Farming: Mace, Wind Charges, Trims and Patterns
The Mace. Craft it from one Heavy Core on top of one Breeze Rod. Heavy Cores only come from ominous vaults, at 7.5% per vault according to the wiki's loot table, and ominous vault loot is set by the world seed, so timing your key does not change it. Since each ominous vault opens once per player, getting more Heavy Cores means running more Trial Chambers, which is why the map and region rules above matter. The Mace's smash attack triggers after a fall of 1.5 blocks or more, hits harder the farther you fell, and cancels your fall damage if it lands. Pair it with Density, Breach or Wind Burst.

Wind Charges. One Breeze Rod crafts into four wind charges, and vaults hand them out directly (8-12 at a time from ominous vaults). They launch you upward, flip doors and levers from range, and set up Mace smash attacks from flat ground. Because Breeze spawners reset every 30 minutes, a chamber doubles as a slow but renewable Breeze Rod farm.
Flow Armor Trim. Exclusive to ominous vaults (22.5% per vault). Duplicate it with 7 diamonds plus a Breeze Rod to get two templates.
Flow and Guster banner patterns. Flow comes from ominous vaults (15%) and Guster from standard vaults (4.2%). A loom never consumes a pattern, so one copy is all you need.
Ominous vaults also roll Enchanted Golden Apples (22.5%), the Creator music disc, blocks of emerald, iron and diamond, and level III-V Ominous Bottles, which let you chain straight into your next ominous trial with a longer omen.
FAQ
What Y level are Trial Chambers in Minecraft?
The starting room generates between Y=-40 and Y=-20, but the structure spreads upward and most rooms sit roughly between Y=-20 and Y=0. They can appear in any Overworld biome except the deep dark.
How do you get a Heavy Core for the Mace?
Heavy Cores only drop from ominous vaults, which need ominous trial keys from ominous trial spawners. The wiki's loot table puts the chance at 7.5% per ominous vault, and each vault opens once per player.
Can you open a vault in Trial Chambers more than once?
No. Each player can unlock each vault only once, although every player in a world gets their own reward from it. Trial spawners do reset after 30 minutes, so keys and Breeze Rods stay renewable.
How do you start an ominous trial?
Drink an Ominous Bottle to get Bad Omen, then let a normal trial spawner see you. Bad Omen turns into Trial Omen for 15 minutes per bottle level, and nearby trial spawners become ominous.
Do Trial Chambers generate in old Minecraft worlds?
Only in chunks generated in Java Edition 1.21 or Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 and later. In an older world, head into land you never explored before that update.
