Minecraft's native Nintendo Switch 2 version arrives on October 27, 2026, giving the best-selling game of all time its first build designed specifically around the console's hardware rather than ported over from the original Switch. Mojang confirmed the date and the launch details on minecraft.net, and pre-orders are open now through the Nintendo eShop and at retail.

01Vibrant Visuals Becomes the Default Look

The headline change is graphical. Vibrant Visuals, Minecraft's biggest rendering overhaul to date, ships enabled by default on Switch 2 rather than as an optional toggle. Mojang originally released the feature in June 2025 alongside the Chase the Skies update, adding directional lighting, volumetric fog, water reflections and light that plays across underwater terrain. Switch 2's extra horsepower is what makes running it well in both handheld and docked play possible on a Nintendo console for the first time.

02The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Gets the Same Treatment

To mark the launch, the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack is also being rebuilt around Vibrant Visuals. The pack swaps in Mario-themed textures, music and skins, along with recreations of locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza, and every digital edition of the Switch 2 release includes it at no extra cost. Mojang says the enhanced lighting changes how familiar builds look even for players who have used the Mash-Up pack since its original Wii U and Switch releases.

03Digital Editions, Pricing and the Free Upgrade Window

Minecraft for Switch 2 ships in three digital tiers. The Standard Edition is the base game and costs $29.99 at full price. Deluxe Collection adds the Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate Collection goes further with five add-ons — the same three plus Decocraft and Weapons & Tools — five Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins; Mojang hasn't published exact list prices for the two upgraded tiers. A physical, game-key-card version is also available at retail for players who prefer a boxed copy over a digital download.

Anyone who already owns a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free, but only through the Nintendo eShop and only until the end of January 2027. Mojang's own post lists Japan, Taiwan and Thailand as exceptions, where the upgrade carries a small regional fee instead of being free. Players who want Deluxe or Ultimate instead of Standard can upgrade to either for a discounted price rather than paying full price twice, though Mojang again hasn't listed the exact discount.

04How This Differs From the Original Switch Version

The original Nintendo Switch Edition of Minecraft, which launched back in 2017, stopped being sold on the eShop in 2018 in favor of the standard Bedrock Edition that unified Minecraft across consoles, mobile and PC. That Bedrock build still runs on the original Switch today, but it was never built to take advantage of hardware the console didn't have. The new Switch 2 release is the first Nintendo-platform version of Minecraft built around extra GPU headroom specifically to run Vibrant Visuals, rather than just a higher resolution or frame rate on the same rendering path.

TipIf you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, redeem your free Switch 2 upgrade through the Nintendo eShop before the end of January 2027 — the offer doesn't cover physical copies and carries a small fee in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand.

05Physical Owners and What Carries Over From Switch

The free upgrade path currently applies to digital owners only — Mojang hasn't announced a trade-in or code-based upgrade route for players who bought a physical Switch cartridge. What does carry over for everyone making the jump is world data: saves built on the original Switch version move across to the Switch 2 release, so existing survival worlds, creations and Realms don't need to be rebuilt from scratch.

06What Mojang Hasn't Confirmed Yet

A few details remain open as of launch eve. Mojang has not said whether the Switch 2 version supports Joy-Con 2's mouse-style sensor for building or navigating menus, a feature Nintendo has pushed for other Switch 2 titles. Vibrant Visuals is also confirmed to switch off automatically in split-screen play and in some Marketplace worlds and content, though Mojang hasn't published a full list of which Marketplace add-ons are affected. Treat both points as unconfirmed until Mojang updates its support pages after release.

For context on the hardware driving the upgrade, see Nintendo Switch 2 on Wikipedia — the console launched broad third-party support for exactly this kind of native, visuals-first re-release rather than a straight port.
