AION 2 Class Guide: Which Daeva Should You Play First?

AION 2's global launch brings eight classes and two factions. Here's how to pick the right Daeva, faction, and build for your first few hours.

AION 2 launched free-to-play worldwide on October 5, and the first real decision it asks of you isn't a quest or a dungeon — it's who you're going to be. NC's MMORPG opens with eight classes split across two warring factions, built around a world the developer says is 36 times larger than the original 2008 AION, with flight treated as a core combat tool rather than a travel convenience. None of that matters much if your first character feels wrong by level 10.

This guide walks through the faction split, what each class actually does in practice, and which ones hold up best if you're playing solo versus queuing for group content. None of these picks lock you out of the game's story or its world — they just change how your first few hours feel.

TipIf you're unsure which class to pick, start with Templar or Gladiator — both survive solo content comfortably, and it's easier to pivot toward a support class later than to claw back survivability on a glass-cannon one.

01Elyos or Asmodian: Pick Your Side First

Before you touch a class, AION 2 asks you to choose a faction: Elyos or Asmodian. This isn't cosmetic. NC has confirmed that AION 2's commercial launch servers are faction-locked — each server hosts only one side, with every Elyos server paired to an Asmodian counterpart so the two still meet in shared PvP space. That means your faction choice decides which server population you're grouping with for dungeons and world content, and which side you're fighting for when the Abyss — AION 2's dedicated faction-war zone — opens up.

There's no mechanical advantage baked into either faction; the split is about lore, lighting, and which cities and starting zones you'll see first. If you've got friends already playing, check which faction they rolled before you commit, since server population is split along faction lines rather than shared.

02AION 2's Eight Launch Classes, at a Glance

AION 2 ships with eight playable classes, each built around a distinct weapon type and role: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. Broadly, they split into the roles you'd expect from an MMORPG, even if AION 2 dresses them up with aerial skill combos and chain-cast animations unique to the game:

  • Gladiator — a two-handed melee fighter leaning on sustain and area-of-effect swings, built to wade into a fight and stay there.
  • Templar — the shield-and-sword tank, with the defensive cooldowns and crowd control groups expect from a frontliner.
  • Assassin — dual-wielding burst damage with mobility skills, built around picking a target and closing the gap fast, in the air or on the ground.
  • Ranger — bow-based ranged damage with kiting tools, playable solo without leaning on a group to stay alive.
  • Sorcerer — staff-based elemental magic DPS, trading survivability for burst damage from range.
  • Spiritmaster — a pet-based caster that splits damage between the player and a summoned spirit, giving it more breathing room than a pure Sorcerer.
  • Cleric — the dedicated healer, built around group content rather than solo leveling.
  • Chanter — a hybrid support that mixes melee attacks with buffs and group heals, sitting between a Cleric and a melee DPS.

Every one of these covers a full archetype on its own; there's no "starter class" that gets replaced later. What changes is how forgiving each one is while you're still learning AION 2's combat rhythm.

03The Best Classes for Solo Players

If you're going into AION 2 without a static group, prioritize classes that can sustain themselves in a fight rather than ones that rely on a healer standing next to them. Templar and Gladiator both hold up well here: Templar because its defensive kit lets it shrug off damage that would drop a squishier class, and Gladiator because its lifesteal-leaning skills let it keep fighting through damage instead of disengaging to heal up.

Ranger is the other strong solo pick, for a different reason — it can kill things before they close the distance, and its mobility skills make it easier to reposition out of trouble than a melee class stuck in the middle of a pack. Spiritmaster is a reasonable middle ground if you want to play a caster solo: the summoned spirit absorbs some aggro and adds damage, so you're not purely relying on positioning and cooldowns the way a Sorcerer is.

Cleric and Chanter are the two classes to be cautious about soloing. They're built to keep other people alive, and leveling either one alone tends to be slower going than picking a self-sufficient damage dealer, even though both become genuinely valuable the moment you start queuing for group dungeons.

04The Best Classes for Groups and PvP

Once you're running AION 2's instanced content — the game ships with dungeons spanning solo, 5-player, and 10-player formats at launch — role balance starts to matter more than solo survivability. A Templar or Cleric is close to guaranteed a group slot, since tanks and healers are always the bottleneck in any MMORPG's queue. Chanter fills a similar niche from a more flexible position, since it can flex between support and melee damage depending on what a group already has.

For the Abyss and other faction-versus-faction content, burst classes like Assassin and Sorcerer tend to define who wins a skirmish first, since AION 2's combat rewards picking a target out of the air and finishing them before they can react. Gladiator and Ranger both translate well into open-world PvP too, trading the raw burst of an Assassin for more consistent pressure over a longer fight.

05Flight Changes How You Fight

The thing that separates AION 2 from a typical theme-park MMORPG is that verticality isn't optional set dressing — NC built the game's encounters and PvP zones around players fighting in three dimensions, with altitude treated as a real advantage rather than a visual flourish. That changes how some classes play in practice: a Ranger or Sorcerer that can hold height over an enemy gets a much easier fight than one stuck on the ground, while melee classes need to factor flight into their gap-closers rather than assuming a fight stays planted on a single platform.

It's worth spending time in an early, low-stakes zone just getting used to flight before you queue into anything competitive. The skill ceiling here is real, and players who treat flight as a travel button instead of a combat tool are giving up a real advantage in both PvE and the Abyss.

06Creating Your First Daeva

None of the above matters if character creation trips you up. Here's the quick version of getting a Daeva into the world:

Creating Your First Daeva

  1. 1Choose Elyos or Asmodian before anything else — this decides your server pool and which side of the Abyss you're fighting from.1 min
  2. 2Pick from the eight launch classes based on role: Templar or Gladiator for solo survivability, Ranger for solo ranged damage, Cleric or Chanter if you plan to group often.2 min
  3. 3AION 2's character creator is deep — spend a few minutes here, since your Daeva's look carries into every cutscene and into the Abyss.5 min
  4. 4Favor a newer or recently opened server if your faction's older servers are queued; NC has been adding servers, like the new EU Nathara and Tassin pair, as demand grows.2 min
  5. 5The early quests teach ground combat basics before introducing flight — don't skip the tutorial prompts.30-45 min
  6. 6Once flight unlocks, spend time in a safe zone getting comfortable with aerial movement before queuing for a dungeon or PvP.15-20 min

07A Fast Start Out of the Gate

AION 2's launch week has already been bigger than NC's own marketing push suggested it would be. The developer's own account reported the game crossing 400,000 concurrent players and hitting the No. 1 spot on Steam's Global Top Sellers chart within days of its October 5 commercial launch, on top of opening new EU servers to handle the overflow. That kind of launch volume is exactly why your faction and server choice matters more than usual right now — queues and population balance are still shifting as NC adds capacity.

None of that early momentum changes which class is right for you, but it's a reasonable sign the game's launch-week support won't be an afterthought if your first week includes server waits or balance hotfixes.

08Watch Before You Commit

If you want a sense of AION 2's tone and world before you lock in a faction, NC's own launch trailer is the clearest official look at what a founding story mission looks like in motion, separate from any class-specific gameplay footage.

Heirs of the Broken Sky, AION 2's official launch trailer, posted September 30, 2026.

Whichever class you land on, the good news is that AION 2 doesn't punish a first pick the way some MMORPGs do — every class covers a full role from level one, and the biggest mistake you can make this week is overthinking the choice instead of just getting into the sky.

FAQ

How many classes does AION 2 have at launch?

Eight: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. Each covers a complete role rather than being a temporary starter option.

Is AION 2 free to play?

Yes. AION 2 is free-to-play on PC through Steam and NC's PURPLE launcher, with in-app purchases available alongside the base game.

Can I change my class after character creation?

NC hasn't published official details on class-switching for the global version as of launch week, so treat your initial pick as a long-term commitment for that character rather than something you can freely reverse.

Does picking Elyos or Asmodian affect gameplay?

It doesn't change class balance, but it does lock you to that faction's servers, starting zones, and side of the Abyss faction war, so check which faction friends are playing before you commit.

What platforms is AION 2 available on?

AION 2 is PC-only at launch, available through Steam and NC's PURPLE launcher.
