PEAK Console Edition Guide: Biomes, Items and Survival Tips

PEAK's October 22 console launch adds PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 with crossplay — here's how room codes, rope stamina and biome hazards really work.

PEAK's co-op climb just got a lot more crowded. The indie hit from Aggro Crab and Landfall launched on PC in June 2025, and on October 22 it arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 with full crossplay against Steam. Every biome, item and update released since launch comes with it, so console scouts are dropped straight into the same daily-shuffled mountain PC players have been dying on for over a year. Here's what's actually different at launch, how the climb and its rotating biomes work, and which items and hazards will decide whether your run ends at the summit or face-down in a snowdrift.

01What Changes With PEAK's Console Launch

Aggro Crab's own launch-week post on PEAK's Steam page confirms the console versions ship with every biome and item released since the original build, not a stripped-down port. Crossplay is on by default between PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and lobbies are joined with the room codes the developers added to Steam ahead of the console build specifically so cross-platform groups could find each other.

A few limits are worth knowing before you invite a mixed-platform group. There is no save transfer between platforms, so a console scout starting fresh won't inherit badges earned on Steam. Client-side mods are not guaranteed to work once console players are in the lobby, and the developers flag them as a likely source of bugs in mixed sessions, so it's safest to play unmodded the first time you climb with console friends. According to the official PEAK FAQ, online play on Xbox, Switch and PlayStation requires that platform's paid online subscription, while solo offline runs do not — worth checking before a group chat full of console scouts tries to schedule a climb.

TipPause and copy your Room Code before you invite anyone — console scouts need it to crossplay with Steam friends.

Pricing differs by platform rather than by content. The digital console release sits at the same budget price Steam players have paid since 2025, and Skybound Games is handling a separate PS5 physical edition that ships in December with a disc, a buddy code for a friend to join free, and a printed "scout passport" with stickers — a nice touch for a game whose entire identity is built around group embarrassment. None of that changes what's in the game itself; digital and physical buyers land on the exact same build.

There's also no online matchmaking on any platform. You find groups through friends or the official Discord server, then trade room codes to get everyone — console or PC — into the same lobby. If your group is new to PEAK, set the lobby to invite-only before you share a code anywhere public, since an open room code works for literally anyone who has it.

02How the Climb and Biome Rotation Work

The setup hasn't changed for the console release: you're stranded on a mysterious island with up to three other scouts, and the only way off is to reach the peak of the mountain at its center and summon a rescue helicopter with a flare. Small mistakes are fatal, and the mountain itself is rebuilt daily, so there's no route you can simply memorize and repeat.

You climb through a chain of biomes, lighting a campfire at the top of each one before pushing into the next. Since the Final Ascent content update, the later stretch of the mountain doesn't always look the same twice — the developers' own patch notes describe the volcanic Caldera and the Kiln rotating in and out of the daily map pool alongside the undead-themed Gloom and the Citadel, so one run might send you up a lava-streaked volcano and the next up a crumbling fortress full of skeletons. A patch in late September specifically reworked the map pool "to properly randomize" which of these you get, so don't assume last night's route is tonight's.

03Essential Gear for New Scouts

Ropes and climbing spikes are still the backbone of any climb — place a rope before a ledge and the scouts behind you can use it to skip the hardest part of a route. Grabbing a rope costs stamina based on how far you are from it when you reach for it, so sprinting at a rope from a distance will drain you faster than walking up and taking it cleanly.

Stamina governs almost everything else too — climbing, sprinting and even leaving certain hazards drain it, and running dry mid-climb with no ledge nearby is one of the most common ways solo scouts die. Watch your bar before committing to a long stretch without a resting spot, and let a teammate go first on an unknown rope if your stamina is already low.

Beyond the basics, a handful of "Mystical" items are worth learning early. The Bugle of Friendship grants a shared stamina buff strong enough that the developers have nerfed it more than once for being overpowered compared to everything else in its item class. Pandora's Lunchbox hands out a random buff — but can also curse you, and it ignores invincibility when it does, so don't eat it while you're already in trouble. The Ritual Dagger and a team's Checkpoint Flag both affect how a run restarts after a death, and leaving one of the game's anti-gravity "anti-spheres" causes real fall damage on landing, even after a recent patch toned it down, so don't treat them as a free teleport.

04Surviving the Caldera and the Kiln

When your run rolls the volcanic pairing, expect lava streams, petrifying rocks and hot rock bridges across the Kiln, plus Condors patrolling the Caldera's skies — the developers' own patch notes joke about the birds' nests being there for a reason, and getting grabbed by one is exactly as bad as it sounds. Luggage containing useful items spawns in both biomes; recent patches shifted some of it from the Caldera's end-of-biome statue area into the Kiln's main spawner instead, so check both areas rather than rushing straight to the top.

Frogs are the other recurring menace here and across the mountain generally. They've been nerfed repeatedly since the Final Ascent launch — their tongue grab now has a shorter range, a narrower angle and a longer cooldown than it did at release, and getting grabbed by one now briefly protects you from being grabbed again. They're less deadly than they used to be, but a frog still ending a climb a stamina bar at a time.

05Surviving the Gloom and the Citadel

The Citadel leans into its medieval-fortress theme with campfire saves that track your luggage and other carried objects correctly as of recent patches — a fix that mattered because earlier versions could silently drop your progress if you saved and reloaded there. Reviving a downed teammate inside the Gloom or the Citadel also ties into the Medieval History badge, which had its own bug where players couldn't earn it after loading a save; that's since been patched.

Both biomes reward patience over speed. Because the console launch folds in every post-launch patch at once, new scouts effectively start on the most-polished version of these areas the game has had — none of the save-corruption or badge-blocking bugs that plagued early PC players through 2026 should be present on day one.

Your First Climb, Step by Step

  1. 1Open the pause menu to find your lobby's room code, or get one from a friend. Room codes are how PC and console scouts find each other now that crossplay is live, and there's still no public matchmaking, so a code is the only way in.2 min
  2. 2If you're sharing your room code anywhere semi-public, switch the lobby to Invite Only first. An open code lets anyone who has it join, console or PC.1 min
  3. 3Practice grabbing a rope from up close rather than sprinting at it from range — the stamina cost scales with your distance when you reach for it, so a clean approach saves stamina for the climb above.5 min
  4. 4Clear each biome by climbing to its summit and lighting the campfire there. This is what advances the run to the next biome and is also your save point if the group needs to stop.15-30 min
  5. 5If the run rolls the volcanic Caldera and the Kiln, watch for lava streams, hot rock bridges and Condors near their nests. If it rolls the Gloom and the Citadel, slow down and revive teammates promptly — it feeds the Medieval History badge.varies
  6. 6Items like Pandora's Lunchbox and unidentified mushrooms can help or hurt. Test them when the group has stamina and health to spare, not mid-crisis.varies
  7. 7Reach the peak and use the flare to call your ride out. That's the win condition for the run — everything before it is just staying alive long enough to get there.5 min

06Badges, Fixes and Tips Worth Knowing

Several of PEAK's badges have had rocky histories worth knowing about before you chase them. The Bookworm badge, tied to reading Guidebook Scrolls, briefly had a bug that reset player progress at the start of every run; anyone who already earned it legitimately kept it once the fix shipped. The Jester achievement, earned by collecting Clown Luggages, had its requirement lowered from three to two. None of these affect a fresh console save differently from a Steam one — you're all climbing the same, current build.

For your first few runs, three habits matter more than gear: communicate ledge-by-ledge with your group over proximity chat rather than racing ahead solo, drop a rope or spikes for the scouts behind you even when you don't personally need them, and treat every unfamiliar item — mushrooms, amulets, lunchboxes — as a gamble rather than a guaranteed buff until you've seen what it does. The ESRB's own rating listing for the PS5 version calls out fantasy violence and online interaction, which is about as accurate a one-line summary of a PEAK run as you'll find.

PEAK's console debut doesn't reinvent the climb — it just lets a lot more scouts fall off the same mountain together. Learn the rope-stamina system, respect whichever biome pairing you roll into, and keep an eye on your teammates' luggage, and you'll get further than most first-time groups do.

FAQ

Does my Steam save carry over to PS5, Xbox or Switch 2?

No. PEAK's console launch does not support save transfer between platforms, so you'll start from scratch on a new platform and re-earn any badges.

Can PC and console players climb together?

Yes. Crossplay is on by default across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and groups join each other using room codes rather than public matchmaking.

Do PC mods still work once console players join?

Not reliably. The developers say client-side mods may still function but aren't guaranteed to behave correctly in a mixed lobby, and they recommend playing unmodded the first time you climb with console friends.

Is the console version missing any content from the PC version?

No. The console release ships with every biome, item and patch released since PEAK's 2025 PC launch, including the Final Ascent update's Gloom and Citadel biomes.

Is there a physical edition?

Yes, but only for PlayStation 5. Skybound Games is publishing a PS5 disc release in December that includes a buddy code and a printed scout passport, alongside the digital release on all platforms.
