Silent Hill: Townfall: How to Beat The Weight (Patch 1.6.0)

Patch 1.6.0 changed how The Weight's grab attack works in Silent Hill: Townfall. Here's the boss strategy that holds up on every difficulty.

The Weight has been the single most talked-about enemy in Silent Hill: Townfall since launch, and for good reason: early reviews and player feedback zeroed in on its relentless hunting behavior and its grab attack, which could end a run instantly on Story Mode and Normal. Developer Screen Burn Interactive has spent the weeks since release tuning that encounter twice, first in patch 1.4.0 and again in patch 1.6.0. If you're heading into St. Amelia now, here's exactly what's changed, what hasn't, and how to get through the fight on whichever difficulty you're playing.

01Why The Weight Is Silent Hill: Townfall's Hardest Encounter

Unlike most of the creatures stalking St. Amelia, The Weight isn't a one-off scripted threat — it's a sustained hunt that follows Simon Ordell through a dedicated stretch of the campaign, searching rooms, tracking sound, and closing distance faster than most players expect from a stealth encounter. There's no weapon that reliably puts it down, so the entire section is built around evasion: breaking line of sight, picking hiding spots it won't immediately check, and managing noise instead of fighting back.

At launch, getting grabbed on Story Mode or Normal difficulty meant an instant death, which turned a tense chase into a save-scumming slog for a lot of players, and it's the single complaint that shows up most often in early reviews and player feedback. Konami and Screen Burn acknowledged the backlash directly, and two patches later, the encounter plays very differently depending on which version you're running — which makes checking your current patch number before you go in more important than it sounds.

02What Patch 1.4.0 Changed About the Grab Attack and AI

Patch 1.4.0, released October 8, 2026, was Screen Burn's first real pass at the complaint. According to Konami's official patch notes, grab attacks from The Weight stopped being an instant kill on Story Mode and Normal difficulty, dealing heavy damage instead. The patch also reworked its searching behavior so it no longer lingers in front of the player's objective for long stretches or repeatedly rechecks the same hiding spot, and its hunting behavior was tuned to track the player less aggressively overall. A broader AI pass in the same update made every enemy, not just The Weight, less sensitive to gunfire, running footsteps, and the player entering a hiding space, while grapple attempts against a blocking player were removed for every enemy except The Weight.

03What Patch 1.6.0 Changed on Top of That

Patch 1.6.0 landed October 28, 2026 (November 2 on GOG), and it's the version you're most likely running right now if you've kept the game updated. It's a bigger update overall — it adds a new Hard difficulty, rebalances every existing difficulty around it, and adds a persistent map position indicator — but it also walks back part of the 1.4.0 change. Konami's notes state plainly that "The Weight's attack severity reduction now applies only in Story Mode," which means the softened grab damage from 1.4.0 no longer carries over to Normal and above. If you're playing on Normal, Hard, or Nightmare after updating to 1.6.0, treat every grab attempt as potentially lethal again. The patch also scales enemy hearing sensitivity with difficulty, so stealth matters more the higher you climb. You can confirm you're on the current build by checking the lower-right corner of the main menu for v1.6.155963 on Steam and Epic, or v1.6.156035 on PS5.

How to Survive The Weight, Step by Step

  1. 1Open the main menu and look at the lower-right corner. If it reads v1.6.155963 on Steam/Epic or v1.6.156035 on PS5, you are on patch 1.6.0 and the grab-attack cushion only applies on Story Mode.1 min
  2. 2Use or drop anything you do not need for this stretch, then make sure healing items and flashlight batteries are full before you trigger the sequence - there is no safe point to back out once it starts.2 min
  3. 3Stick to walking or short dashes between cover instead of sprinting down corridors. Patch 1.4.0 reduced sensitivity to running footsteps, but it did not remove it.Ongoing
  4. 4The Weight stopped lingering at objectives after patch 1.4.0, but once it is actively hunting you, duck around a corner or into a hiding spot the moment you lose direct sight rather than trying to outrun it in the open.Ongoing
  5. 5It still patrols previously-cleared spaces even though it no longer camps your objective - treat every room as live until you are well past the encounter.Ongoing
  6. 6On Story Mode a grab still only deals heavy damage. On Normal, Hard, and above after patch 1.6.0, play as if a single grab is a run-ender.Ongoing
  7. 7If the encounter funnels you toward the Remote Systems Control console, pull up the collectible manual patch 1.4.0 added instead of guessing at the sequence under pressure.2 min

04Common Mistakes That Still Get You Caught

Even with the softer AI from patch 1.4.0, most deaths against The Weight come down to the same handful of habits. Running in open corridors is the biggest one — the 1.4.0 notes specifically call out reduced sensitivity to a running player, but "less sensitive" isn't "deaf," and sprinting past a search zone will usually still pull its attention. Re-entering a room you've already looted is another: The Weight's searching behavior was tuned down so it doesn't camp in front of objectives, but it still patrols, and backtracking through cleared space is one of the more common ways players walk straight into it.

The other mistake is treating every difficulty the same after updating. Players who cleared the early sections on Story Mode before 1.6.0 and then jumped to Normal sometimes forget that the grab-attack cushion doesn't carry over anymore — muscle memory built on Story Mode's forgiving grab window will get you killed on Normal or Hard post-patch.

05Gear Up Before You Trigger the Encounter

Because the chase covers a sustained section of the map rather than a single room, your prep matters more than your reflexes once it starts. Top off healing items and flashlight batteries before you cross into the area — there's no reliable way to back out and restock once The Weight starts actively hunting. If you're on Normal or above post-1.6.0, assume a single grab can end your run and plan your route with that in mind rather than relying on the heavy-damage buffer that only exists on Story Mode now. It's also worth clearing your inventory of anything you don't need for this stretch; fewer items to cycle through means less time fumbling the quick-select menu with The Weight closing in.

TipQuick-save (or rest at a save point) immediately before you trigger The Weight's hunt, not just at the start of the level — on Normal and above after patch 1.6.0, one bad grab can undo several minutes of progress.

06Cracking the Remote Systems Control Puzzle

The same 1.4.0 update that reworked The Weight also improved two puzzles elsewhere in the game. The "Remote Systems Control" console now has a collectible in-game manual you can pull up for quick reference while you're operating it, instead of having to memorize the sequence or alt-tab to a guide. The separate "Aux Line" pipe puzzle also got a clearer layout. Neither change affects The Weight directly, but both cut down on the kind of fiddly backtracking that used to break the tension Screen Burn is clearly trying to protect in this section of the game.

Simon's surroundings do a lot of the storytelling here, too — St. Amelia's fog-choked streets are full of hand-painted protest signage and half-finished civic monuments that are worth slowing down for between encounters, once you're not actively being hunted.

07Picking the Right Difficulty for Your First Run

If The Weight is the reason you've been putting off Silent Hill: Townfall, Story Mode is the only difficulty where patch 1.6.0 still guarantees you won't be one-shot by its grab. Normal is a meaningful step up now that the instant-kill grab is back in play there, and the new Hard mode goes further still, since enemy hearing sensitivity scales up with difficulty on top of the harsher grab. There's a warning screen that pops up if you try to start your very first playthrough on Nightmare, which is Konami's clearest signal yet that the top difficulty isn't meant for a first run.

Difficulty descriptions were also rewritten in 1.6.0 to spell out what actually changes between modes instead of leaving it vague, so it's worth reading them in the options menu before committing if you're not sure which tier fits you. If you're coming from an earlier Silent Hill game and expect Normal to be the "intended" experience, treat that assumption carefully here — Townfall's Normal difficulty got meaningfully harder against this specific enemy after 1.6.0 than it was at launch.

08What Screen Burn Has Said About Further Balancing

Screen Burn has been unusually direct about the complaints around The Weight. Back in September, ahead of either balance patch, the developer posted on X that it had "heard" players struggling with the encounter and that a fix was coming, alongside notes on an unrelated PC stuttering fix. That post predates both 1.4.0 and 1.6.0, but it's useful context for why the encounter has been reworked twice in two months rather than left alone after a single pass.

For a sense of the game's tone and setting before you go in — Simon's arrival in St. Amelia, the fog, the general atmosphere Screen Burn built the whole game around — Konami's extended gameplay trailer is still the best official look, even though it predates both of these patches.

FAQ

Does patch 1.6.0 still make The Weight's grab attack non-lethal?

Only on Story Mode. Konami's official 1.6.0 patch notes state that the attack-severity reduction from patch 1.4.0 now applies exclusively to Story Mode, so Normal, Hard, and the new difficulty tiers no longer get the softened grab.

What is different about The Weight's AI since launch?

Patch 1.4.0 reworked its searching and hunting behavior so it spends less time camping objectives or repeatedly rechecking the same spot, and tracks the player less aggressively overall. Patch 1.6.0 layered difficulty-based hearing sensitivity on top of that, so it is more alert to noise the higher your difficulty.

How do I check which patch I am running?

Look at the lower-right corner of the main menu. Patch 1.4.0 shows as v1.5.154194; patch 1.6.0 shows as v1.6.155963 on Steam and Epic, or v1.6.156035 on PlayStation 5.

Is the Remote Systems Control puzzle part of The Weight's chase?

Konami lists the puzzle manual as a separate quality-of-life fix alongside the Weight changes in the same patch, not as part of that specific encounter.

Should new players avoid Nightmare difficulty entirely?

Konami added a warning screen in patch 1.6.0 that appears if you try to start your first playthrough on Nightmare, which is as close to an official recommendation against it as the game gives.
