Phasmophobia Resonance Update: Unity 6, New Ghost Tools

Kinetic Games previews Phasmophobia Resonance: a Unity 6 migration, reworked Sound Sensor, smarter voice commands and Xbox Play Anywhere, landing late November.

Kinetic Games used Development Preview #22 on November 2 to lay out the next step for Phasmophobia: a combined update called Resonance, arriving in late November. It bundles the long-promised move to the Unity 6 engine with a batch of new ghost-hunting tools, and it is the clearest look yet at where the game is headed before its planned 1.0 launch in late 2027.

01What Resonance Actually Bundles Together

Kinetic Games had originally planned to ship its Unity 6 migration and a separate content update on their own schedules. The developer now says shipping them apart "was looking unreasonable, both for us and you," so the two have been merged into one release named Resonance. The studio has not committed to an exact release day beyond "late November," and full patch notes will only arrive alongside launch.

Resonance folds in a new Sound Sensor read, expanded Voice Recognition commands, a custom map-pool selector, a new in-game warning system for Code of Conduct violations, and the jump to Unity 6 itself. A planned cosmetic overhaul for player characters, which the studio had hoped to include, has been pushed out to its own separate update so Resonance can ship as a more stable release.

02The Move to Unity 6

Phasmophobia has run on an older build of Unity since its 2020 launch, and Kinetic Games frames the Unity 6 migration as the technical centerpiece of Resonance. The stated goals are stability, performance and "futureproofing" the game ahead of 1.0. The developer says a large share of the bugs reported against the current Unity 6 test build have already been fixed, and that common crashes players have been running into should be addressed at launch, alongside unspecified lighting improvements across every map.

TipResonance doesn't have a locked release day yet — Kinetic Games says only "late November," so check Phasmophobia's own Steam news page before counting on a specific date.

New graphics options are coming out of the engine switch too: additional quality presets, an extreme shadow setting, Eye Adaptation for VR players, and a full set of colour-blindness filters covering protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia and their milder "-omaly" variants. None of this has been benchmarked publicly yet, so treat the performance claims as the developer's own until Resonance actually ships and players can test it.

03A Smarter Sound Sensor and New Dowsing Rods

On the gameplay side, the Sound Sensor's map readout is being overhauled. Icons will now reflect the type of sound picked up — a looping sound lingers on the map for a while, while a one-off sound pings once and disappears — and only sounds on the same floor as the sensor will register. Kinetic Games says the tool can also help identify a ghost's type by how fast its movement pings appear, which the studio is pitching as especially useful mid-Hunt.

04Voice Recognition Learns New Commands

Resonance also expands Voice Recognition beyond the current evidence-gathering phrases. Players will be able to instruct a ghost to interact with nearby objects such as doors and light switches, or to prompt it into giving a sign of its presence. The same prompts will work for players running Voice Recognition in Text mode, and VR users on Text mode get access to the commands through the in-game Sanity watch. A new Journal page lists every usable phrase, which should cut down on players shouting half-remembered commands into an empty room.

05Build Your Own Random Map Pool

A smaller but widely requested change lets players curate their own random map pool instead of relying on the game's full location list. New buttons let you quickly select only small, medium or large maps, and a dice icon keeps the original fully-random behavior for anyone who prefers it. Removing a location's polaroid from the board also frees up space for the maps Kinetic Games keeps adding, including the 42 Edgefield Road rework the studio is already teasing for later this year.

06Xbox Play Anywhere and the Longer Road to 1.0

Resonance also brings Phasmophobia into Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere program. Anyone who owns the Xbox version will be able to play the same license across PC, handhelds like the ROG Ally, and Xbox Series X|S without buying it twice. Kinetic Games is pairing that rollout with a new moderation flow: players who break the game's Code of Conduct will generally get a warning message first rather than an immediate ban, unless the violation is severe enough to warrant one outright, and reporters will be told when their report results in action.

Resonance is explicitly a bridge update. Kinetic Games describes it as a technical foundation for "the next year's worth of work" leading into Phasmophobia 1.0, which the studio is now targeting for late 2027. The player character visual overhaul — more than 30 new cosmetics plus a reworked Customisation Shop — and the 42 Edgefield Road remodel are both confirmed to follow Resonance rather than ship inside it, with no firm dates yet.

FAQ

When does the Phasmophobia Resonance update release?

Kinetic Games has only confirmed "late November" in Development Preview #22. The studio says full patch notes will go out alongside the launch itself, with no specific date set yet.

Does Resonance include the new player character cosmetics?

No. Kinetic Games pulled the Player Character Visual Update out of Resonance to give it more development time, and it will ship as a separate update with no confirmed date.

What does the Unity 6 move actually change for players?

Kinetic Games says it should improve stability, performance and lighting, and fix a number of common crashes, though none of that is independently verified until Resonance actually ships.

Is Phasmophobia joining Xbox Play Anywhere with this update?

Yes. Resonance adds Phasmophobia to the Xbox Play Anywhere program, letting anyone who owns the Xbox version play the same license on PC and other supported devices.

Will the reworked Sound Sensor make ghost identification easier?

Kinetic Games says the new Sound Sensor map can help indicate a ghost's type by its movement speed, but you'll still need to combine it with other evidence to confirm a ghost.
