Deadlock Ranked Beta Season 2: What Changed and Your New Rank

Deadlock's Ranked Beta Season 2 is live, with a global rank redistribution, fewer protection shields, faster rank-ups, and a reworked hero-unlock system.

Valve kicked off Deadlock's Ranked Beta Season 2 on November 5, ending Beta Season 1 and resetting the ladder with a set of rule changes the studio says are a direct response to how the first season played out. The new season runs for four months, closing on Thursday, March 11, 2027, and it lands alongside a round of hero balance changes Valve pushed out the day before.

01What Changed in Deadlock's Ranked Beta Season 2

According to Valve's official season announcement on Steam, every Ranked player's rank is getting a soft reset at the start of Season 2, but it is deliberately smaller than the reset that opened Beta Season 1. On average, Valve says players should expect their badge to drop by around one level, with the exact outcome also shaped by last season's win rate: Valve is nudging players 1-2 subranks based on that number to land them in a more accurate spot.

Players who already climbed in Beta Season 1 do not need to calibrate again. Anyone who skipped Ranked entirely last season will still have to run calibration matches as usual before their badge is set.

02Rank Resets, Redistribution and What It Means for Your Badge

The more unusual part of the update is what Valve calls a "global rank redistribution." Having watched the Ranked population through the first season, including a wave of new players joining since, Valve is re-curving everyone's existing rank before applying the softer reset described above. The studio frames it as a two-step operation: the whole playerbase gets redistributed along the rank curve first, and only then does the roughly one-badge soft reset get applied on top of the new numbers.

The practical effect is that the two adjustments can cancel each other out in either direction. Valve is explicit that some players will see their rank go up despite a reset being applied, while others will drop further than the average one-badge figure suggests. The highest a player can be placed at the start of Season 2 is Ascendant I, with top performers from last season able to land as high as Ascendant III -- up from an Oracle VI ceiling at the end of Beta Season 1.

03New Ranked Rules for Beta Season 2

Valve also tuned several systems underneath the ladder itself for this season:

  • Rank loss protection shields reduced. Full-badge shields drop from 5 to 3, and subrank shields drop from 2 to 1. Players in Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus lose their shields entirely -- those tiers now have no loss protection at all.
  • Faster progression. Points earned per match rise from 300 to 350, and the points needed to rank up from a final subrank into a new badge drop from 2,000 to 1,500 (the cost between subranks within a badge is unchanged at 1,000).
  • More hero bans. Ranked matches now allow four hero bans instead of three.
  • Reworked hero unlocking. Unlocking a hero for Ranked play now uses a points system rather than a strict win count: you need 35 points, earning 2 per win and 1 per loss, replacing the old system that effectively required 15 wins.

Valve says the unlock change is meant to keep the same bar -- players should know a hero well before taking it into a ranked match -- while giving players who are close but not quite at 15 wins a fairer path in.

04The November 4 Balance Patch That Set Up the Season

The Ranked changes followed a hero balance patch Valve shipped on November 4, tuning several heroes ahead of the new season. Healbane's healing-reduction stacks now fall off faster (down from 57.8% to 54.7% at two stacks, and from 82.2% to 72% at four), while Apollo's Riposte counter now disarms the target on a Pommel Hit and clears any parry the target already had active. Baba took a round of nerfs across Spirit Resistance scaling, melee damage per boon and the cooldown on Baba's Brew, and Celeste had several ability values trimmed, including Dazzling Trick's silence duration and Radiant Daggers' cast range. On the buff side, Mo & Krill's Scorn heals for more off heroes and Rat King's Rule, Ratannia! now also cuts its own cooldown. If you haven't dived into this update yet, keep it in mind alongside any patch notes on Deadlock's Steam news hub before you lock in a Ranked pick.

05Why This Matters for Deadlock's Ranked Scene

Beta Season 1 was Valve's first real test of a competitive ladder for Deadlock, and the studio is treating this update as a direct correction pass rather than a routine refresh. Pulling shields from the top ranks pushes Phantom-and-above players toward a system where every loss counts immediately, while the lower rank-up cost and higher per-match points should make climbing feel faster for everyone else. The global redistribution is the part worth watching closest: it means two players who finished last season at the same badge could land in very different places once Season 2's calibration settles, independent of the headline "about one badge" soft reset figure Valve published.

Deadlock remains PC-only and free to play through Steam, with Valve continuing to treat Ranked as a beta system it is actively reshaping patch to patch rather than a finished mode.

TipSitting near a subrank boundary? Climb now rather than later -- subrank loss shields just dropped from 2 to 1, so a single bad loss costs you the badge faster than it did in Beta Season 1.

FAQ

When did Deadlock's Ranked Beta Season 2 start?

Beta Season 2 began on November 5, 2026, immediately after Beta Season 1 ended, and runs for four months until Thursday, March 11, 2027.

Will my rank reset in Season 2?

Yes, a soft reset drops most players by about one badge on average, but Valve is also running a one-time global rank redistribution first, so some players will actually end up higher than before despite the reset.

Do returning Ranked players need to calibrate again?

No. Only players who sat out Ranked entirely in Beta Season 1 need to run calibration matches again this season.

How many rank loss protection shields do I get now?

Full-badge shields drop from 5 to 3, and subrank shields drop from 2 to 1. Players in Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus get no shields at all.

What changed about unlocking heroes for Ranked?

Unlocking a hero now costs 35 points, earned at 2 per win and 1 per loss, instead of being tied strictly to roughly 15 wins.
