Metro Redux Next-Gen Update: Everything New on PS5 and Xbox

Metro Redux's free next-gen update lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with native 4K60, upscaled 4K120, uncapped PC frame rates and DLSS, FSR support.

Deep Silver and 4A Games pushed out a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux, bringing both 2014 remasters in line with current hardware more than a decade after they first launched. The PC version arrived October 22, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners got theirs on October 29, timed just ahead of the franchise's next entry, Metro 2039, on February 4, 2027.

The update isn't a full remake. Deep Silver has been clear that the underlying campaigns, level design and story beats are untouched; this is a technical pass aimed at modern displays, modern GPUs and modern consoles, not a reimagining of Artyom's journey through the Moscow Metro.

01What's Actually New in the Update

Per Deep Silver's own patch notes, both games get 4K textures, higher-quality lighting, shadows, particles and post-processing, increased geometry and texture detail, improved PBR materials, spatial audio support, and improved animation and sound quality. Both titles also add support for Xbox controller Impulse Triggers and PS5 DualSense Adaptive Triggers, so the weapon recoil and gas-mask tension that defined the originals comes through on current controllers for the first time.

02PC: Unbound Frame Rates, Plus TSR, DLSS and FSR

On Steam, Epic and GOG, the patch removes the old frame rate cap entirely and lists performance as uncapped, so results now depend on your hardware rather than the ceiling the 2014 release shipped with. Upscaling support was also added across the board: 4A's own TSR, NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR are all selectable in the video settings. PC also picks up a fix for mismatched mouse sensitivity, a power-optimized mode for the Microsoft Store build and Xbox Ally/Ally X, and Epic Online Services integration for achievements and cross-platform accounts. Advanced PhysX is on by default.

Some players have reported a DLSS 5 (DLSS-NR, for neural rendering) toggle appearing in the settings menu. Deep Silver's own notes only list "DLSS (NVIDIA)" without a version number, so treat the DLSS 5 specifics as unconfirmed even though base DLSS, FSR and TSR support is officially documented.

03Console Launch: Native 4K60, Upscaled 4K120

On PS5 and PS5 Pro, the update targets true 4K at 60 FPS or an upscaled 4K mode at up to 120 FPS on a compatible display, with PS5 Pro adding PSSR upscaling on top. Xbox Series X gets the same native 4K60 and upscaled 4K120 options, plus 4A TSR anti-aliasing, Xbox Play Anywhere and a power-optimized mode for Xbox Ally handhelds. Xbox Series S is listed for native 4K at 60 FPS only; the 120 FPS upscaled mode is Series X-exclusive on the Xbox side.

04Free for Every Existing Owner

The next-gen update isn't a paid re-release. Anyone who already owns Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux on Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, the Microsoft Store, the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store gets the upgrade automatically at no extra cost. There's no separate SKU to buy; the existing purchase just updates in place.

TipOwners of the Microsoft Store version should start a new game after updating; existing saves don't carry over, though chapter select is unlocked if you want to skip ahead.

05A Comic Book and a Shot at Metro 2039

The update also wires up Deep Silver Account support for both games for the first time. Linking your account to Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux or Metro Exodus through an in-game QR code unlocks an exclusive digital comic book, and each linked game earns one entry toward a giveaway for a copy of Metro 2039; signing up for Deep Silver's newsletter adds a fourth possible entry.

06Save Data on Microsoft Store Doesn't Carry Over

The one platform-specific wrinkle in the official notes concerns the Microsoft Store versions of both games, where existing save data does not carry over into the updated build. Deep Silver recommends starting a fresh campaign there, though chapter select stays available if you'd rather jump straight to a later point in either story. Steam, Epic, GOG, PlayStation and Xbox Store saves aren't affected. The patch notes also list a long run of bug fixes across both games, including a PS5 save-corruption fix, Xbox Series X|S Quick Resume stability fixes, restored missing keyboard bindings and several story-blocking crashes.

07Why Now: 4A Games Is Prepping Metro 2039

The timing lines up with 4A Games' next project. Deep Silver's official Metro hub confirms Metro 2039 is scheduled for February 4, 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and refreshing the two Redux games now gives newcomers a current-gen way to catch up on Artyom's story before the next chapter arrives.

08Should You Jump Back In Now

If you already own either game, there's no reason not to let the update install; it costs nothing and only adds options rather than removing anything. If you've never played them, this is the best version of both games that has ever existed, with current-gen frame rates and sharper visuals on top of the atmosphere and gunplay that made the originals stand out. Either way, check your storefront for the update before Metro 2039 arrives next February.
