Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Steam, taking the series back to the day it all started — the moment the Locust Horde surfaced on Sera and tore the world apart. The campaign follows a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fourteen years before the original Gears of War, and developer The Coalition rebuilt that origin story in Unreal Engine 5 with modernized movement like vaulting, sliding and flanking. It also kept one classic Gears idea fully intact: massive, scripted boss fights that break up the squad-based cover shooting with a single oversized threat you have to solve like a puzzle rather than just out-shoot.

Across the five-act campaign you will face three distinct Brumak encounters, a charging Corpser, and a pair of airborne Scoria beetles, plus recurring world bosses in the four-player Horde Siege mode. None of them go down to sustained rifle fire alone — each one has a specific weak point, attack pattern or arena trick to exploit. Here is how to beat every boss fight in Gears of War: E-Day without burning through all your ammo and grenades first.

01Why E-Day's Bosses Feel Like Classic Gears Again

E-Day's enemies and creatures were reimagined for this origin story, darker in tone than the versions longtime fans remember, and that extends to how the bosses are staged. Rather than scaling health bars up and calling it a day, The Coalition built each encounter around a specific mechanic: cover-and-charge timing for the first Brumak, a destroy-the-weapons-in-order puzzle for the armored one, and arena geometry for the Corpser and Scoria. That makes positioning and patience more valuable than raw damage output in every one of these fights, and it is also why button-mashing your way through a boss in E-Day tends to go worse than it did in earlier Gears games.

It helps to think of these fights the way the original trilogy's best boss encounters worked: each one teaches you a rule in the first thirty seconds, then punishes you for ignoring it for the rest of the fight. Spend the opening exchange figuring out what a boss wants you to do — bait a charge, strip armor in order, split attention between two targets — before you commit to burning cooldowns or heavy ammo.

Stock up before you walk into any of the fights below. Gut-Puncher grenades and the Prototype Lancer both punch well above their weight against armored targets, and running out of either mid-fight against a Brumak or a Scoria is the single most common way these encounters drag on.

TipGut-Puncher grenades and the Prototype Lancer are the two most reliable tools against every boss in E-Day — restock both before walking into any of the fights below, not just the Brumak encounters.

02Brumak #1: Back in the Fold (Act 1)

Your first Brumak shows up near the end of Act 1, and it is the simplest of the three fights in the campaign — there is no armor to strip and no scripted weak point to uncover, just a single health bar and a lot of incoming fire. Keep solid cover between you and the beast at all times and focus your shots on its head and chest whenever you get a clean angle.

Resist the urge to peek out for a better shot. The first Brumak hits hard enough that trading damage in the open is rarely worth it, and the fight rewards patience: pop out, land a few hits, duck back, repeat. Clear any nearby Locust first so you are not getting flanked while you focus on the bigger target.

03Armored Brumak: Fort Vigil's Wall (Act 3)

The toughest of the three Brumak fights comes during the Fort Vigil siege in Act 3. This Brumak is fully armored and carries mounted weapons, and its plating shrugs off regular rifle fire completely — you cannot just wear it down. The fight has two stages: first on the wall, where you cannot actually kill it (that stage always ends with the Brumak smashing through the gate), and then in the courtyard below, where the real fight happens.

Once it is in the courtyard, work through its mounted weapons in order: take out the back-mounted launcher first, then the two arm-mounted guns, and only then does its head become exposed. Hammer the head once it is open rather than wasting ammo on already-destroyed weapon mounts, and keep moving between the courtyard's cover points so you are never caught in the open when it turns its remaining guns your way.

04Unarmored Brumak: Paths Diverge (Act 4)

The third and final Brumak shows up in Act 4, and it flips the formula one more time: no armor plating and no mounted weapons, which also means there is no weak point to expose and no destruction sequence to solve. It is a straightforward, if dangerous, war of attrition.

If you still have a mounted Troika available, open the fight with a sustained burst into its head before it closes distance. After that, alternate Gut-Puncher grenades with the Prototype Lancer while circling between cover pieces, and avoid standing still for more than a second or two — this Brumak closes distance faster than the first one did.

05Corpser: Use the Arena Against It

The Corpser fight in Act 3 is less about damage and entirely about the room you are fighting in. The Corpser telegraphs its charge clearly, and the arena is built around support pillars specifically so you can bait the charge into one. Stand near a pillar, let the Corpser commit, and sidestep behind the pillar at the last moment so it slams into the structure instead of you.

That collision opens a recovery window where the Corpser is briefly exposed — that is your cue to unload, not to reposition for a better angle. Repeat the bait-and-punish cycle rather than trying to out-trade it with sustained fire from the open, which just invites a charge you have not set up on your own terms.

06Scoria Twins: Critical Failure (Act 4)

Act 4 closes out the boss roster with two Scoria at once — large, winged beetles that move between the air and the ground, each tracked on its own health bar. Fighting both simultaneously is the real challenge here, so resist the instinct to spread damage evenly between them.

When a Scoria is airborne, hit it with the Prototype Lancer, which handles flying targets better than most of your other options. The moment one lands, switch immediately to Gut-Puncher grenades and commit to finishing it before turning to the second. Sprint laterally to dodge their yellow area-of-effect blasts rather than trying to out-heal the damage, and always focus one Scoria down completely before splitting your attention to the other.

07Horde Siege World Bosses and Launch-Week Tips

The campaign is not the only place E-Day's bosses show up. Horde Siege, the game's four-player PvE mode, has squads pick from four classes — Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher — and team up with other squads on shared objectives, including recurring world bosses on top of standard wave defense. Surviving a run nets rewards, customization unlocks and loadout upgrades that carry over between sessions, separate from anything you earn in the single-player campaign. If a campaign boss gave your squad trouble, Horde Siege is a good place to practice the same cover-and-punish habits against a world boss before you go back and finish the story on a harder difficulty.

E-Day also ships a separate 4v4 Versus mode with new maps and both Ranked and Social playlists, so once you have the campaign's bosses down, there is a competitive outlet that does not involve fighting AI at all. None of the tips above carry over to Versus, but the movement fundamentals — using cover, timing pushes, not standing still in the open — are the same muscle memory either mode asks for.

Boss-by-Boss Quick Reference

  1. 1Keep hard cover between you and the charge, and focus fire on its head and chest — this first Brumak has no armor sequence to solve.10-15 min
  2. 2Destroy the back-mounted launcher first, then the two arm guns, and only then unload on its exposed head.15-20 min
  3. 3Open with a carried Troika into its head, then alternate Gut-Puncher grenades and the Prototype Lancer while circling cover.10 min
  4. 4Bait its charge toward the arena's support pillars so it slams into them, then punish the recovery window.10-15 min
  5. 5Hit the airborne beetle with the Prototype Lancer, switch to Gut-Puncher grenades once it lands, and clear one at a time.10-15 min

The Official Gameplay Demo premiered at the Xbox Games Showcase and Gears of War: E-Day Direct on June 7, 2026, four months before launch.

E-Day launched worldwide at 8am PT on October 6, with Premium Edition and Game Pass players getting early access from October 1. If you are jumping into the campaign this week, treat these fights as puzzles rather than damage checks — every boss in E-Day has a specific answer, and finding it is almost always faster than trying to brute-force your way past it with a bigger gun.

FAQ

How many boss fights are in Gears of War: E-Day's campaign?

The campaign has three Brumak encounters across Acts 1, 3 and 4, plus a Corpser and a pair of Scoria beetles in Act 4 — five distinct boss fights in total, not counting the recurring world bosses in Horde Siege.

Which Brumak fight is the hardest?

The armored Brumak at Fort Vigil in Act 3 is generally considered the toughest of the three, since you have to destroy its mounted weapons in sequence before its head becomes vulnerable, all while its armor plating shrugs off regular rifle fire.

Do I need a specific weapon for the boss fights?

No single weapon is required, but the Gut-Puncher grenade launcher and the Prototype Lancer are especially effective against armored targets like the Brumak and the Scoria, so restock on both before a boss encounter if you can.

Are there boss fights outside the campaign?

Yes — Horde Siege's four-player PvE mode has squads team up against recurring world bosses for loadout rewards and customization unlocks, separate from the scripted campaign encounters covered in this guide.
