Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and the multiplayer side of the game arrived with a genuinely large day-one lineup: twelve Core maps, three Ground War battlegrounds, a modular Gunfight arena that never plays the same way twice, and over a dozen modes to sort through. If you just installed it, here's everything you need to get your bearings before you queue your first match.

01Every Launch Map You'll Drop Into

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 Core 6v6 maps, three large-scale 32v32 Ground War maps, four 2v2 Gunfight maps, and the modular Kill Block battleground, according to Call of Duty's own launch breakdown. The Core 6v6 roster is the widest spread of settings the series has shipped in a while:

  • Cachette and Coal — a converted wine warehouse and mechanic's garage on the outskirts of a French rail terminal
  • Lithium — a Mexican lithium refinery beneath the Sierra Mountains, now an active combat zone
  • Lotus, Nautical, Reactor U92 and Silkworm — four South Korean settings spanning a fishing village, a burning ferry, a meltdown-stricken reactor complex and a dense shopping district
  • Mumbai and Transit 213 — tight residential blocks and an overgrown bus depot in India
  • Munition and Sentry — North Korean and Russian military facilities
  • Rooftops — the snow-lined rooftops of a New York hotel

The three Ground War maps are Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium and Forest, all set around the city of Hajin, while the four Gunfight maps — Cafe, Library, NYC and Smuggler — are built for the tight 2v2 round-based format. The classic small map Shipment isn't part of the initial 12; it returns separately on October 27, rebuilt on a Russian harbor but keeping its famously cramped, chaotic layout.

02Kill Block: The Battleground That Never Repeats

The map worth learning first is Kill Block, officially called the Westbridge Training Facility. It's a modular battleground that reconfigures its layout between rounds, supporting 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch. Some sections are entirely new, while others are built from pieces of classic Modern Warfare locations — Crash, Highrise and Shoot House all show up in randomized placements — and with more than 500 possible combinations, no two matches play out the same way.

That randomization matters tactically: because you can't memorize a single callout sheet for Kill Block the way you can for a static map, the better habit is to re-read sightlines and rotations at the start of every single round instead of running on muscle memory from the last one.

03Which Mode Should You Queue First

Modern Warfare 4 launches with over a dozen Multiplayer modes, split across Standard, Alternate and Hardcore variants. A few are brand new to the series:

  • Inflation — eliminate enemies for cash, but carrying too much wealth paints a target on your back for the rest of the lobby
  • Hijack — carry a Data Spike to the enemy's Comm Station and hold the area while it uploads
  • Collateral — a Search & Destroy/Buy Phase hybrid: no respawns, no custom loadouts, and every kill and round win pays out cash you spend on better gear between rounds
  • Combat Outpost — Ground War's take on Domination, where capturing an Outpost also expands your team's spawns and unlocks UAVs, airdrops and even a Light Tank the longer you hold it

Alongside those sit the returning staples — Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-For-All, Search & Destroy and Gunfight — plus a Proving Grounds training course built specifically to teach the game's movement system through timed Courses. If you're coming in fresh, that's genuinely the best first stop, since it's low-pressure and directly transfers to how you'll need to move around Kill Block and the bigger Ground War maps.

TipRun every course in the Proving Grounds before your first competitive match — hitting an S Rating there builds the movement habits you'll need on Kill Block's constantly shifting sightlines, and it costs you nothing to try.

04Building Your First Loadout

Create-a-Class, including full Gunsmith access, unlocks at Player Level 4. Until then, you're deploying with premade Default Loadouts, so don't panic if your options look thin for the first session or two. Once it unlocks, Modern Warfare 4 ships with 33 weapons across Assault Rifles, SMGs, Shotguns, LMGs, Marksman Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Pistols, Launchers and a single Melee Weapon, with most of the roster unlocking gradually as you level up. Early highlights worth prioritizing:

ClassEarly Unlocks (Level)
Assault RifleHan 86 (4), M4 (14), Hyeon Burst (21)
SMGISO Nightshade (4), VEL 46 (5), Wz.55 Striga (18)
ShotgunRezi 12 (4), Warlord (32)
LMGFinn LMG (4), Type 73 (9)
Marksman RifleMAR-9 (4), Oris 8.6 (11)
Sniper RifleKG-7 Vulcan (4), Astaroth .57 (25)
LauncherPILA (4), RPG-8 (23)

Each Attachment you unlock is shared across every weapon that supports it, so investing time into one Assault Rifle pays off everywhere else in that class. If you want to run two Primary Weapons instead of a Primary and Secondary, equip the Overkill Perk; fully leveling a weapon also unlocks its separate Apex Attachment and opens Weapon Prestige, which relocks your attachments in exchange for exclusive camos. For the full math on leveling and Prestige, Call of Duty's own weapons breakdown is the most reliable source.

05Operators, Equipment and Killstreaks

There are 33 Operators available at launch across Multiplayer and DMZ, and Create-a-Class lets you assign one to each individual loadout. Five are available immediately, one unlocks through a Digital Standard or Vault Edition pre-order, and eight more come with the Vault Edition. The rest are earned through play: eight unlock by completing specific Campaign missions, four by hitting DMZ Player Level milestones, and five through Multiplayer challenges — things like landing 50 headshot kills or three Operator kills without dying across ten different lives.

Tactical and Lethal Equipment, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks all unlock on the same Player Level track as weapons, running from Level 4 up to Level 55. Killstreaks are grouped by how many kills they take to earn:

Kill RequirementKillstreaks (Unlock Level)
4 killsUAV (4), Bomb Glider (6), Care Package (9), Impact Warhead (12)
6 killsArtillery Beacon (4), Crossfire (20), Combat Drone (26), Counter UAV (31)
8 killsWheelson (16), Missile Salvo (24), Railgun Sentry (38)
10 killsAttack Helicopter (4), Deathstalker (35), Advanced UAV (40), Argonaut (45)
12 killsGunship (51), Air Lockdown (55)

Early on, UAV and Attack Helicopter are the most reliable picks since they unlock right at Level 4 and don't demand an unrealistic streak to earn. Save the higher-level options like Gunship and Air Lockdown for once you've got a loadout you're comfortable running for a full match.

Tactical and Lethal Equipment follow the same progression curve. Flash and Smoke Grenades, plus Frag and Sticky Grenades, are available the moment you hit Level 4, while situational picks like the Heartbeat Sensor (Level 23), Shock Stick (Level 29) and Screamer Mine (Level 53) come later. Field Upgrades such as the Portable Radar and DDOS also unlock at Level 4, with Trophy System (14), Recon Drone (33) and Tactical Insertion (45) arriving as you keep leveling. There's no wrong order to prioritize these in — just know that your Level 4 options already cover the basics of info-gathering, area denial and a panic button, so you're never truly loadout-starved early on.

Your First Session Checklist

  6. 6Jump into Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium or Forest for 32v32 vehicle combat and the new Combat Outpost mode once you're comfortable with the basics.20 min

06What's Coming After Launch

A few things are deliberately missing from the day-one build. Shipment arrives separately on October 27, and two Halloween-themed modes — Possession, a new mode where eliminating an enemy lets you possess and teleport to them while stealing their loadout, and the returning Infected — are scheduled to land in the run-up to Season 1. Call of Duty: Warzone integration isn't part of the launch build at all; that content arrives with Season 1 later this year. It's worth checking Modern Warfare 4's official game page or its Steam store listing before that drops, since Season 1 patch notes typically land there first.

None of this changes what's playable right now, though. Between 12 Core maps, three Ground War battlegrounds, a Gunfight arena that reshuffles itself every round, and a weapon roster deep enough to keep you unlocking new gear for weeks, there's more than enough in the launch build to learn before Season 1 adds anything else on top.
