Helldivers 2 Patch 7.2.0: Anti-Cheat Switch, Weapon Changes
Helldivers 2's Devoid of Liberty 7.2.0 patch swaps GameGuard for Easy Anti-Cheat and rebalances the Sickle, shotguns, and several stratagems.
Arrowhead Game Studios has pushed Devoid of Liberty: Patch 7.2.0 to Helldivers 2, and the headline change has nothing to do with Automatons or Terminids. The studio has swapped its PC anti-cheat system from nProtect GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, a move it frames as a direct response to a wave of cheat mods that had been circulating through the community. The same build also lands a full balance pass on weapons and stratagems, including a long-requested rework of the Sickle energy weapons.
Here's what changed, why Arrowhead made the switch now, and what it means for players who run mods alongside their next drop.
01What Changed in Patch 7.2.0
Posted to the game's Steam news feed as "Devoid of Liberty: 7.2.0," the update bundles three things into one release: the anti-cheat migration, a community-requested balance pass, and a change to how one bug enemy strain spawns. Arrowhead also separated the Bile enemy strain — the one that spawns Bile Warriors, Spewers, and Scavengers — into its own strain controlled independently by the game's internal spawn system, giving it the same kind of on-screen warning that Rupture and Spore Burst strains already get.
02Why Arrowhead Is Switching to Easy Anti-Cheat
In a companion post explaining the decision, Arrowhead said GameGuard "wasn't as effective as it could have been" and that the studio had seen cheats affecting matchmaking pick rates and, in some cases, manipulating the game's ongoing Galactic War narrative for other players. Easy Anti-Cheat, described by Arrowhead as an industry standard used in more than 200 games, rolled out alongside the 7.2.0 build on October 20. The studio pointed players toward Easy Anti-Cheat's own support articles for technical questions about the new system.

03What the Switch Means for Mods
Arrowhead was explicit that this is as close as it has come to an official modding policy: cosmetic and non-gameplay mods are fine in principle, but anything that creates an unfair advantage or alters the shared war state is now a target. The practical effect lands on creators more than players. Some mods that touch gameplay systems may stop working outright under Easy Anti-Cheat, and cosmetic mods that previously worked without issue could also break until their individual creators push updates compatible with the new system.
04Weapon and Stratagem Balance Changes
The balance section is one of the larger ones Arrowhead has shipped in recent patches. The LAS-16 Sickle and LAS-17 Double-Edge Sickle both get faster time-to-fire and cooldown, addressing complaints that the energy rifles had fallen behind ballistic weapons since launch. Shotguns using light-penetration ballistic pellets — the SG-8 Punisher, SG-225 Breaker, and SG-225SP Breaker Spray&Pray — all gain a damage increase, as does the SG-22 Bushwhacker sidearm. The PLAS-39 Accelerator Rifle reloads faster and staggers less aggressively, intended to make it easier to land follow-up shots on weak points.
Legendary warbond primaries from the Killzone and Halo crossover sets also got a stat bump, since those weapons can't take the attachments that let other primaries specialize. Several stratagems changed too: the M-1000 Maxigun now releases players from its firing animation instantly instead of after a half-second delay, the CQC-20 Breaching Hammer gets more spare charges, the Orbital Airburst Strike has a tighter shrapnel spread and shorter cooldown, and both the EXO-51 Lumberer exosuit and A/FLAM-40 Flame Sentry hit harder with their flame particles.

05The Scope of Authority Warbond Context
Patch 7.2.0 arrives a week after the Scope of Authority Premium Warbond went live on October 20, adding the R-40 Sightliner sniper rifle, AMW-20 Apex anti-materiel rifle, LAS-44 Nova energy rifle, and two armor sets built around a Stationary Shroud passive that reduces weapon sway and detection range. Arrowhead bundling the anti-cheat change into the same build as a fresh wave of paid content is worth noting: the studio is clearly trying to clean up the game's integrity before the warbond's sniper-and-stealth loadouts bring in a new round of players.
06Why It Matters
GameGuard has drawn recurring compatibility complaints from Helldivers 2's PC community since launch. Replacing it with a widely deployed system like Easy Anti-Cheat doesn't guarantee fewer complaints, but it does signal Arrowhead is willing to revisit infrastructure decisions it has defended in the past. Combined with a balance pass that finally gives the Sickle variants and several underused primaries a reason to see squad use again, 7.2.0 is a bigger patch than its weapon-tuning sections alone would suggest. FAQ
Why did Arrowhead switch from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat?
Arrowhead said GameGuard "wasn't as effective as it could have been" against a wave of cheat mods affecting matchmaking and the shared Galactic War, and moved to the more widely used Easy Anti-Cheat on October 20.
Will Easy Anti-Cheat break my mods?
Mods that alter gameplay systems to create an unfair advantage are the primary target and may stop working. Cosmetic mods should generally be fine but could need an update from their creator to stay compatible.
What weapons changed in Patch 7.2.0?
The Sickle and Double-Edge Sickle got faster time-to-fire and cooldown, several shotguns and the Bushwhacker sidearm gained damage, the PLAS-39 Accelerator Rifle reloads faster, and the Killzone and Halo legendary warbond primaries received a stat bump.
Is the Scope of Authority Warbond part of this patch?
The warbond itself launched October 20 as planned. Patch 7.2.0 is a separate, same-week update covering the anti-cheat switch, an enemy-spawn change, and weapon and stratagem balancing.
What happened to the Bile enemy strain?
Arrowhead split Bile Warriors, Spewers, and Scavengers into their own independently controlled bug strain, giving it the same kind of on-screen warning indicator that strains like Rupture and Spore Burst already have.
