Digital Extremes has put a firm window on Warframe: Tau, confirming the long-teased expansion launches this December. The update was detailed during Devstream 198, "Tau Part One," and the developer's own announcement calls it "our most expansive update ever."

01Warframe's Next Star System Opens in December

Tau has been on Digital Extremes' roadmap since it was first shown at TennoCon 2026 in July, but the studio only pinned a release window during the October 30 broadcast. According to the official Steam Community announcement, players will "jump back into Warframe" this December for what the post bills as the game's biggest content drop yet, opening a brand-new region of space beyond the familiar Origin System.

Tau won't replace the Origin System content you already play. Digital Extremes says there will "remain much to do in the Origin System going forward," with Tau Missions and new worlds layered on top rather than swapped in.

02Brysko Is the 67th Warframe, and Matt Mercer Voices His Inner Monologue

The centerpiece reveal is Brysko, Warframe number 67. Digital Extremes describes him as a "world-weary, noir-inspired detective" who enforces his own brand of street justice with a kit built around his Hound Companion and signature weapons: the dual Rain & Shine fist weapons and the Corecracker Exalted Pistol. Per the official Digital Extremes recap, Brysko stays silent to the people around him, but his detective's inner monologue is voiced by Critical Role's Matthew Mercer.

Brysko also debuts a new premium customization category Digital Extremes calls the Chimera Skin. Like a Protoframe, it lets you swap between Brysko's Warframe form and a more Sentient-styled Chimera aspect, complete with its own voiced dialogue, on the fly.

03Fornax and Perita Are the First Two Tau Destinations

December's launch centers on two linked locations. Fornax is the ring city at the heart of Tau, described in the Steam post as a "mob-run ring city" players will patrol as part of Brysko's story. The official TennoCon 2026 event recap adds that Fornax is "soaked in Bloom and black rain," run by a kingpin called the Hunra, and home to Portau, described as Warframe's first original card game, playable at the casino that anchors the city.

Perita is the second location named in the announcement. Digital Extremes says its ecosystem collapsed into a hostile desert after the events of The Old Peace, leaving feuding clans of Dazannah fighting over scarce resources and allies. The last unconquered clan's chieftain sends his son, Catulast, to ask the Tenno for help — the hook Digital Extremes is using to pull players into the region. Expect more of Tau's star chart to arrive in updates after December, as the developer has only detailed this first wave so far.

The official recap also flags Fornax's slums and docks as home to "addicts and thugs," with the casino at the city's center acting as the destination players work toward across the opening missions. Portau, the card game housed there, is described as Warframe's first original minigame built specifically for Tau rather than an existing system reused for the new region — a sign Digital Extremes is building out Fornax as its own self-contained hub rather than another set of standard mission tiles layered onto the Origin System's usual mission types.

TipTau is being added as a new Star Chart alongside the Origin System, not a replacement — your current Warframes, Mods, and mission progress all carry over when Fornax goes live this December.

04Why This Reveal Matters for the Game's Future

Tau is Digital Extremes' attempt to expand Warframe's map for the first time in the game's history, rather than adding another planet or Open World to the existing Origin System. Warframe has run as a live-service title since 2013, and the studio has leaned on major narrative chapters — most recently The Old Peace — to keep its decade-plus playerbase engaged between content droughts. A new star system is a bigger structural swing than those chapter updates, which is likely why Digital Extremes is spacing the reveal across two Devstreams instead of a single showcase.

For returning players wondering whether they need to catch up on older quests first, Digital Extremes hasn't said Tau requires finishing any specific prior chapter — the announcement only promises the new region opens up "beyond anything you've ever known" once the update goes live. Exact prerequisites, if any, are unconfirmed until the studio publishes full patch notes closer to release.

05What's Still Unconfirmed

Digital Extremes has not published an exact December release date, a specific patch version number, or full patch notes — those details are expected closer to launch. The studio has also said a second Tau-focused Devstream is still to come, which should cover more of the star chart beyond Fornax and Perita, additional Brysko ability details, and likely the harder release-date commitment players are waiting on. Treat December as a confirmed month, not a confirmed day, until Digital Extremes says otherwise.
