Activision and Infinity Ward dropped the official Season 1 launch trailer for Modern Warfare 4 on October 28, and it is the clearest look yet at what the game's first free content update actually contains. Season 1 does not go live until November 6, but the trailer and its accompanying blog already confirm three new multiplayer maps, a sprawling new DMZ black site, two new weapons, and the return of a fan-favorite mode. Here is everything the trailer reveals, broken down.

01What the Season 1 Launch Trailer Shows

The trailer opens on the snowbound streets of a new map before cutting through gunfights across Canyon's rock walls and a reimagined Shoot House, then drops into the dim, labyrinthine corridors of a facility the briefing calls X01. It closes on a montage of new weapons and Operator unlocks tied to the Season 1 Battle Pass. Posted to Call of Duty's own channel, the trailer functions as the visual half of a much longer written roadmap the studio published the same day.

Treat the trailer as the highlight reel and the blog as the full briefing — between the two, almost nothing about Season 1's Multiplayer and DMZ content is left unconfirmed.

02Three New Multiplayer Maps, Plus a Kill Block Combo

Season 1 launches with more than six maps in rotation once pre-season additions are counted, but three are brand-new at launch. Backstab is a medium 6v6 map set in a snow-covered, war-torn town, with abandoned tanks and several elevated sightlines including the Stronghold House roof and the Sniper House's upper level. Canyon trades snow for sun-scorched rock walls and a central Mesa overlooking both ends of the map, with a River area built around a Convoy Ambush set piece. Shoot House returns reimagined against a snowy North Korean backdrop, keeping its classic three-lane layout of Junkyard, Center tunnels, and Containers, with an overhead Hospital and Apartment worth fighting for.

Infinity Ward is also launching a featured Kill Block combo called Crash, where all three slabs on that map stay static instead of rotating between rounds. The studio says the combo was hand-picked from the most popular slab combinations players used during the MW4 beta, and it carries over into other Core Multiplayer modes, including Search and Destroy. Two more maps, Ministry and Overflow, are already confirmed for the Season 1 Reloaded mid-season drop, alongside unannounced locations.

03New and Returning Modes Before the Season Even Starts

Several modes arrived ahead of November 6 rather than waiting for launch day. The remastered Shipment map went live October 27 as a pre-season bonus for grinding early Weapon XP, followed by the new Halloween party mode Possession on October 29 and the returning Infected on October 30. At Season 1 launch proper, the fan-favorite Grind mode returns alongside Drop Zone, and the Gauntlet 1v1 variant becomes accessible through a dedicated Wager Match Event. Infinity Ward says more modes, including a Counter Attack bomb-defusal mode, arrive at mid-season.

TipPlay the returning Shipment, Possession and Infected modes now to bank Weapon XP before Season 1 — the new Cronen Osprey and CSG-35 both unlock through the Battle Pass, so leveling early pays off once the season goes live.

04X01: A New DMZ Black Site Inside Hajin

The DMZ expansion is arguably the trailer's biggest reveal. X01 is described as a former Russian weapons facility, seized by North Korean forces and hidden along the northern edge of the Hajin Exclusion Zone. The briefing calls it a GRANIT Arms black site: a multi-floor maze of cargo bays, vehicle depots, underground production lines, and a sealed Deep Vault. Ghost serves as the squad's handler inside X01, issuing new DMZ Orders as operators push deeper, while resistance reportedly includes troops from the 100 Spirits faction and tougher named threats, including a Juggernaut-led Commander called The Captain.

Forward Operating Bases also pick up new stations tied to the update, including a dedicated Battle Pass and Store kiosk and a Vendor that accepts DMZ Cash for players who own Season 1 BlackCell. Several specific enemies and new equipment inside X01 remain deliberately withheld in the official briefing, which labels them unconfirmed pending deployment.

05New Weapons and the Season 1 Battle Pass

Two weapons unlock through the Season 1 Battle Pass at launch: the Cronen Osprey, a 5.56 assault rifle with an 882 RPM fire rate built for control at range, and the CSG-35 SMG. Later in the season, Infinity Ward is adding the full-auto JAK 12 shotgun and a melee weapon called the ZLR Talonhawk axe, plus two new Apex Attachments. All of it sits inside a 100-tier Battle Pass that mixes free and premium rewards, with the premium track guaranteeing more than 50 unlocks across Weapon Blueprints, Operator skins, Calling Cards, and Finishing Moves. Players who buy BlackCell, or the Vault Edition, get that premium content bundled with extra DMZ Cash and other store perks.

Season 1 also introduces two new Operators, Blix and the BlackCell-exclusive Agent XERO, each with their own in-universe bios on the official Modern Warfare 4 site.

06Warzone Integration and the Road to November 6

The trailer and blog stop short of detailing Call of Duty: Warzone's side of Season 1, and Activision is deliberately holding that back. Two new Warzone maps, Hajin and Zodiac, are confirmed to arrive alongside full Modern Warfare 4 integration, but the studio says a separate blog post and roadmap covering Warzone specifically lands November 2 — four days before Season 1 itself. Everything in this breakdown comes from the Multiplayer, DMZ and general-content sections of that same roadmap, so expect the Warzone picture to fill in fast once the second post goes live.
